Michael Levine, former DEA undercover agent and author writes, about Barry
Seal, (in "Deep Cover", Delacorte Press, 1990, page 14) :
"Colonel Oliver North, for example, was given access to classified DEA
information involving the first undercover penetration of the infamous
Medllin, Colombia, cocaine cartel by an informant, Barry Seal, because it was
believed that the Colombians were bribing high-level members of the Sandanista
government of Nicaragua. It would have been a great propaganda coup for North
in his 'divine' struggle against communism. Seal was clearly one of the most
significant informants in DEA's history and the drug investigation on of the
most important and far-reaching. When it turned out that the bribery
information was not accurate, North decided that he wanted to use Seal to
ferry money to the Contras. Finally, one of the DEA 'suits' (law enforcement
bureaucrats and adminsitrative types) objected. 'But that'll blow the [drug]
case,' he whined. When an angered North didn't get his way, he leaked the
story to the press. Seal's cover was blown and he was murdered by the
Colombians."
