A natural first reaction to Tom Bliley's proposal to prevent citizens
from disclosing or disseminating information regarding chemical plant
safety is that chemical companies must have Bliley in their collective
pocket. Or perhaps he really believes in selling not only our
liberty, but our safety, down the river in the name of protecting us
from terrorism. Who knows? Anyway, it's very enlightening to see
who's buttering Bliley's bread....

The following is a list of contributions Congressman Tom Bliley
received during the 1997-98 campaign season from PACs associated with
chemical companies. Also included in a separate list is a list of
contributions from petroleum-related PACs (since it seems likely that
Bliley's reasoning, if not the particulars of the bill he has in mind,
will protect petroleum refiners, processors, etc. from having to
disclose publicly their safety records). Another interesting tidbit
is that from 1995-98, Bliley received $100,400 from the Nuclear Energy
Institute. (To be fair, practically everyone on the Commerce
Committee got money from NEI, and John Dingell (D-MI), the ranking
majority member at the time, got more than Bliley. But most got far
less.) Let's hope that Bliley doesn't continue trying to "protect" us
by banning disclosure of nuclear plant safety information, too.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR... this is outrageous! If my house is sitting next to a
facility that has the potential to turn my neighborhood into a mini (or
mega)
Bhopal, I want to know about it! And I want to see the information first
hand,
not relayed through petty bureaucrats and politicos whose hands have
probably
been greased by campaign donations from fearful corporate lackeys.

The principles applied here could be extended to almost any information of
significance (of course, the only time they will be is when corporate
lobbyists have an interest in that occuring). No comprehensive database of
dams and levees (would make it easy for terrorists to target critical
infrastructure). If I were a civil engineer or a professional environmental
activist, I could probably think of a dozen more examples.

This is utterly absurd. The government is paying millions and millions of
dollars to collect information critical to the health and welfare of our
communities, and then doing it's best to make sure no one can get at it.

Seems to me that the National Security complex is demonstrating that it is a
far greater hazard to the rights and health and welfare of the average
citizen
than any group of "terrorists" will ever be.

"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety
deserve neither liberty nor safety."

- Ben Franklin, ~1784

Never more accurate! I know whose side Ben would be on in this issue!

GRRR!

Thomas
