There are many other ways to eliminate harmful bacteria in meat products, including improved sanitation and food handling procedures. How many more cases of cancer and other health problems may be caused by irratiation of all meat products, as you suggest? We just don't know yet. However, irratiation will allow meat producers to use even less adequate sanitation procedures and therefore save money. That's what is really driving the call for food irradiation.
