In a statement to reporters before his departure from Marrakesh (southern Morocco), the Iraqi minister, who was received Friday by King Hassan II, said, "We requested Morocco's backing for the condemnation of the no-fly zones set up in Iraq." "We explained to King Hassan II that the decision of American and British governments of enforcing no-fly zones is illegal and illegitimate," the Iraqi minister added, noting that he informed the Moroccan sovereign about UN-Iraqi relations and Baghdad's vision regarding an objective solution for the settlement of the deadlocked situation with the UN and for the consolidation of inter-Arab solidarity. During last weekend's visit by India's prime minister to Morocco, the Moroccan premier called for lifting the embargo against Iraq and renewed Morocco's attachment to the respect of Iraq's territorial integrity. "Morocco deplores the recent air strikes against Iraq," Youssoufi, said at a dinner banquet he hosted on Saturday in honor of visiting Indian Prime Minister Atal Vajpayee. Youssoufi also renewed Morocco's attachment to the respect of Iraq's territorial integrity and sovereignty. "(Morocco) stands for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of that Arab country," he said. The Prime Minister also called for "lifting the embargo imposed on Iraq in order to end the suffering inflicted on its innocent civilian population." Iraq has been the target of regular U.S-British blitzes since last December, when Washington and London started striking Iraq under the pretext that it did not fully cooperate with the United Nations weapons inspectors. In a related development, King Hassan II received on Friday in Marrakesh (southern Morocco), Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohamed Said Al-Sahhaf, who is touring several Arab countries to win their support in the showdown between Baghdad and Washington. "We have asked for Morocco's backing to decry the no-fly zones imposed on Iraq," the Iraqi official, who had already visited Algeria, Libya and Tunisia, told the press before leaving Marrakesh. "I explained to his majesty (King Hassan II) that the U.S and British decision to impose no-fly zones was illegal and illegitimate," the Iraqi official said. Saddam Hussein threatens to attack military bases in Gulf states Iraq, Politics, 2/15/99 Iraqi President Saddam Hussein threatened yesterday that Iraq is capable of attacking the bases that US and British planes use in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. In a statement released yesterday following his meeting with his top assistants, Hussein said Iraq is able to target the sources of aggression against Iraq in any place from which the US and British planes can launch. These statements comes as confrontations between the US air forces and the Iraqi military have become an almost daily occurrence with Iraq anti-aircraft sites and planes posing challenges to the domination to the so-called Northern and Southern "no-fly zones" imposed on Iraq. The zones prevent Iraqi jets from flying in those regions. The US has stated that it will continue to strike at Iraqi targets so long as these challenges take place. The statement, broadcast by the Iraqi News Agency, warned officials in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait against becoming involved in a war against Iraq.
