Iraqi foreign minister hails Morocco's backing and solidarity with Iraq
Iraq, Politics, 2/15/99

Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohammed Said al-Sahaf hailed Morocco's backing and
solidarity with the Iraqi people who are going through difficult
circumstances in view of the UN embargo and US-British air strikes.

In a statement to reporters before his departure from Marrakesh (southern
Morocco), the Iraqi minister, who was received Friday by King Hassan II,
said, "We requested Morocco's backing for the condemnation of the no-fly
zones set up in Iraq."

"We explained to King Hassan II that the decision of American and British
governments of enforcing no-fly zones is illegal and illegitimate," the
Iraqi minister added, noting that he informed the Moroccan sovereign about
UN-Iraqi relations and Baghdad's vision regarding an objective solution for
the settlement of the deadlocked situation with the UN and for the
consolidation of inter-Arab solidarity.

During last weekend's visit by India's prime minister to Morocco, the
Moroccan premier called for lifting the embargo against Iraq and renewed
Morocco's attachment to the respect of Iraq's territorial integrity.

Morocco deplores U.S. - British strikes against Iraq
Morocco, Politics, 2/15/99

Morocco deplores the U.S. - British air strikes against Iraq and renews
attachment to the respect of Iraq's territorial integrity and sovereignty,
said Moroccan Prime Minister Abderrahmane Youssoufi.

"Morocco deplores the recent air strikes against Iraq," Youssoufi, said at
a dinner banquet he hosted on Saturday in honor of visiting Indian Prime
Minister Atal Vajpayee.

Youssoufi also renewed Morocco's attachment to the respect of Iraq's
territorial integrity and sovereignty.

"(Morocco) stands for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of that
Arab country," he said.

The Prime Minister also called for "lifting the embargo imposed on Iraq in
order to end the suffering inflicted on its innocent civilian population."

Iraq has been the target of regular U.S-British blitzes since last
December, when Washington and London started striking Iraq under the
pretext that it did not fully cooperate with the United Nations weapons
inspectors.

In a related development, King Hassan II received on Friday in Marrakesh
(southern Morocco), Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohamed Said Al-Sahhaf, who is
touring several Arab countries to win their support in the showdown between
Baghdad and Washington.

"We have asked for Morocco's backing to decry the no-fly zones imposed on
Iraq," the Iraqi official, who had already visited Algeria, Libya and
Tunisia, told the press before leaving Marrakesh.

"I explained to his majesty (King Hassan II) that the U.S and British
decision to impose no-fly zones was illegal and illegitimate," the Iraqi
official said.

Saddam Hussein threatens to attack military bases in Gulf states
Iraq, Politics, 2/15/99

Iraqi President Saddam Hussein threatened yesterday that Iraq is capable of
attacking the bases that US and British planes use in Saudi Arabia and
Kuwait.

In a statement released yesterday following his meeting with his top
assistants, Hussein said Iraq is able to target the sources of aggression
against Iraq in any place from which the US and British planes can launch.

These statements comes as confrontations between the US air forces and the
Iraqi military have become an almost daily occurrence with Iraq
anti-aircraft sites and planes posing challenges to the domination to the
so-called Northern and Southern "no-fly zones" imposed on Iraq. The zones
prevent Iraqi jets from flying in those regions. The US has stated that it
will continue to strike at Iraqi targets so long as these challenges take
place.

The statement, broadcast by the Iraqi News Agency, warned officials in
Saudi Arabia and Kuwait against becoming involved in a war against Iraq.

Iraqi television displayed yesterday, pictures of Husein meeting with three
of his highest assistants, including Ali Hassan El-Mejid, who was in charge
of Kuwait during the invasion of 1990, to discuss US - British flights in
Iraqi airspace.
