Moynihan has been a treasure. One of the last real and great statesmen, IMO. When
I talked of an "ordeal by fire" I meant in New York.. and I was thinking of Geraldine
Ferraro, who ran twice and had her life just ripped apart. (Her son, her husband, her
finances). Guiliani has "cleaned up" the city, but has done it by rather tyrannical
means. The first thing he did when he got to office was to close down the independent
offices that reviewed police matters. Guiliani has really had to toe the Republican
line
to get back in the party's good graces after he supported Mario Cuomo, a Democrat,
for governor. Cuomo was another of the last great statesmen, IMO. For some reason, I
can't explain, I think Guiliani isn't quite as bad as Pataki, NY's present governor.
But
that may be strictly personal bias since I think Pataki is such a total jerk.
