POSTAL SERVICE ASKS PUBLIC TO DECIDE WHICH 1980s MEMORIES SHOULD
BE
HONORED ON NEW POSTAGE STAMPS
VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL IS AMONG CONTENDERS
Celebrate The Century Balloting Begins Today at
Post Offices
or on line at: http://stampvote.msn.com.
WASHINGTON - The Fall of the Berlin Wall, Country Music, San
Francisco 49ers, Cabbage Patch Kids, "E.T.," Compact
Discs, Cable TV and Aerobics are among the 1980s memories competing
to
appear on 15 new postage stamps next year, the U.S.
Postal Service announced today.
Nationwide balloting will be held through the end of February,
offering the public the opportunity to select from 30 different
subjects to decide which cultural symbols best defined the 1980s.
1980s ballots will be available at all post offices and online at
http://stampvote.msn.com.
"Last year, the public cast millions of votes to let us know what
they
wanted to see on postage stamps honoring the 1950s, 1960s
and 1970s," said Postmaster General William Henderson. "Now is
their
chance to immortalize the 1980s, a decade marked as
much by increasing awareness of the AIDS epidemic as it was by the
dramatic removal of the Berlin Wall, our national obsession
with the personal computer and our children's love for the Cabbage
Patch Kids."
Through the Celebrate The Century program, the Postal Service is
highlighting some of the most significant people, places, events
and trends of the 20th century. The program features the issuance
of
new commemorative stamps into the year 2000, nationwide
balloting on stamp subjects, and the distribution of free education
kits by request to more than 270,000 classrooms across the
country.
In September 1998, the public voted on which subjects would best
commemorate the 1970s. More than 6.8 million votes were
cast. The yellow "Smiley Face" topped voting, followed closely by
"Sesame Street," "Disco" and "Earth Day."
In May 1998, the public selected subjects to represent the 1960s.
Winners included "Man Walks on the Moon," followed by
"Super Bowl Kicks Off" and "The Peace Symbol."
1950s stamp subjects were determined by popular vote in February
1998.
Drive-In Movies, Dr. Seuss' "The Cat in the Hat" and
Rocky Marciano were among the winners.
To help children make informed voting decisions, the Postal
Service,
in cooperation with the U.S. Dept. of Education and 10
leading educational associations, has developed one of the
largest-ever independent, cross-curricular programs.
The Celebrate The Century Education Series features stamp-related
learning materials, giving teachers in more than 270,000
classrooms the opportunity to take their students on an interactive
"field trip" through the 20th century.
The Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee recommends all stamp
subjects
and designs to the Postmaster General, and has selected
the stamps to honor the 1900s through the 1940s. The Postal
Service
is issuing sets of 15 stamps honoring each decade of the
passing century, while the public votes on the subjects for stamps
commemorating the 1950s through the 1990s.
Each decade-specific ballot offers a total of 30 choices in five
categories: People & Events, Science & Technology, Arts &
Entertainment, Sports and Lifestyle. The top two vote-getters in
each
category along with the next five highest in votes will
become stamps for a total of 15 stamps per decade.
Sets of 15 commemorative stamps saluting the 1900s, 1910s, 1920s
and
1930s are now available for purchase at all post offices.
The 1940s stamp set will be issued Feb. 18 at Dobbins Air Force
Base,
Ga. The 1950s set will be issued May, the 1960s in
August, the 1970s in October and the 1980s and 1990s in January
2000.
Balloting for 1990s stamp subjects will be held in May
1999.

one of the contenders in the People & Places category. If it gets
