Anthrax threat turns out to be a hoax

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- An abortion clinic was evacuated after receiving a
letter that claimed to carry anthrax, but a test found no sign of the
deadly bacteria, authorities said. It was one of several clinics around
the nation to receive threats Thursday.

A test done at the scene showed the substance on the letter sent to the
Summit Health Clinic was not anthrax, " so the preliminary test is that
it' s a hoax, " Fire Department spokesman Don Doro said Thursday night.

The woman who opened the envelope and three firefighters who were first
on the scene were taken to Froedtert Memorial Hospital for
decontamination.

Hospital spokesman Mark McLaughlin said all four were allowed to go home
after about an hour. The woman who opened the envelope was given
antibiotics as a precaution.

The FBI was investigating the case " as an act of domestic terrorism, "
said Debbie Pierce, assistant special agent in charge at Milwaukee' s
FBI office.

The discovery of the letter resulted in nearby streets being cordoned
off as hazardous materials personnel checked the scene.

" We' re presuming it' s a hoax, but we have to act like it' s real
until otherwise indicated, " said Susan Hill, president and CEO of
National Women' s Health Organization, which operates eight clinics
around country, including Summit Health. The organization is based in
North Carolina.

Hill said she didn' t know the exact wording, but the message was
something along the lines of: " Have a nice day; you' ve been exposed to
anthrax."

Threats were also reported at clinics in Washington, D.C., and
Cincinnati, a Planned Parenthood center in Manchester, N.H., a Planned
Parenthood clinic in Rapid City, S.D., a Planned Parenthood office at
Sioux Falls, S.D., and a Planned Parenthood center at Burlington, Vt.
threat.

There have been several threats of anthrax to abortion clinics across
the country in the past. All proved to be hoaxes.

Anthrax is a disease that affects mostly farm animals, but its germs,
when inhaled by humans, can cause symptoms similar to those of influenza
and can lead to death if not treated early enough with antibiotics.

Cincinnati police seal off women's clinic after threatening letter
received

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Police blocked traffic and sealed off an abortion
clinic for more than three hours Thursday after the center's director
reported she had received a threatening letter which purportedly
contained anthrax.

The FBI was flying the letter Thursday to its Washington, D.C.,
laboratory for analysis to determine whether the powder substance inside
the letter was really anthrax, FBI spokesman Ed Boldt said.

It is too soon to determine if those responsible for the threat are the
same culprits as those behind similar threats to other clinics
elsewhere, Boldt said.

Police, firefighters and emergency response teams surrounded the
Cincinnati Women's Services center. Debi Jackson, the center's president
and executive director, and three employees were kept inside the
building for several hours until authorities determined there was no
public health threat involved in bringing them out.

Ms. Jackson said the letter appeared similar to others which have been
sent as threats to abortion clinics in other cities during recent
months. The letter contained a note alleging the contents was Anthrax,
she said.

Authorities offered to decontaminate her as a precaution, Ms. Jackson
said. Anthrax is an infectious bacteria.

"It looked like a safe letter. It looked like junk mail that we all get
every day. It had a return address," she said.

Her clinic provides gynecological services and abortions. It has
operated eightyears in its location.

Patients who had appointments Thursday at the center were rescheduled,
Ms. Jackson said. The center otherwise will continue all its services,
she said.
