Gone to graveyards, everyone.....or at least collapsed into the rocking chairs, hoping
the grim reaper comes soon and is quick. Most of the folks you're thinking of are
pushing 60 now...or well on the way to the big 70!!!
That's your answer. One of the most "effective" things that was done by the gummnt in
the 60s-70s was to kill off --or imprison--all the leadership and the potential
leadership
of the "left." I was not part of the Beetle frenzy--but when John died, my first
thought
was : "There goes the last one. The last one who could have provided leadership for his
generation." (whether that's true or not, since I believe John's last years were spent
in
a heroin daze) .
The "generation" (actually a generation is every 25 years, although we've come to think
of it in decades) that followed the hippies was the designer label generation--a group
created by the pendulum's swing from idealistic anti-materialism and anti-corporatism
back to materialism and corporate power in spades. A lot of those kids who grew up in
hippie pads grew up feeling really "deprived" of all the "stuff" so many of their
contemporaries had. And the generation born in the 40s--who would have been 30 in
the 70s, and are in their late 50s now --were only playing at being hippies for the
most
part. Once they grew up they flung themselves headlong into the business of
business.
If the dominant image of the 60s-70s was Ken Kesey's psychedelic bus, the dominant
image of the 80s was the sleak black shiny stretch limo--and everyone wanted to be
seen riding in one. It didn't mean peace and love. It meant POWER!!!
Oddly, whatever its actual impact, the anti-war activists of the 60s-70s did not
experience the movement as successful and emerged from it exhausted and pretty
completely burned out
You don't really expect all those high-powered, $$$million-career 30-something
celebrities to lay it on the line against the Night Stalkers. A scratch might mar the
image and you know what that might do to their careers and earning potential. Folks
wallowing in hard drugs and/or major money don't make particularly good protestors or
revolutionaries. You gotta have folks who feel they have nothing to lose.
Now the younger generation, in their late teens-early 20s now, are something else.
You might see some action from them yet.
