-Caveat Lector- "HIGH MIDNIGHT" SHOWDOWN IN "WILD, WILD EAST" ============================================= (CNNS, 02/21/99) -- The mysterious stranger, J.P. Morgan, sent his flunky, Henry Cabot Lodge, to Marshall McKinley, with a message. The message said, "Back the gold standard, and I'll back you." Out west, Sheriff W.J. Bryan, fastest talker in the west, was backed by The Silver Mine Gang. Marshall McKinley gladly accepted help from Morgan, the mysterious stranger. But Marshall McKinley was also part of John "Dead Eye" Rockefeller's gang. And Morgan was head of his own gang, called "The Bankers." One day, a gunman drew on Marshall McKinley, and shot him dead. Then, in the wild, wild east, a new marshall came to town. Marshall Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt brought his beautiful wife, Alice Lee, along with him. She was the daughter of Henry Cabot Lee, and Henry Cabot Lee was kin to Henry Cabot Lodge, Morgan's flunky. This meant that Marshall Teddy was with the Morgan gang. "Dead Eye" Rockefeller's gang no longer controlled the marshall, since Marshall McKinley had been shot dead. This was in the early 1900s, in the days of the big-time oil rustlers. The different gangs sent their cowboys to brand all the oil as theirn. Soon, a war broke out between the two biggest oil rustling gangs: "Dead Eye" Rockefeller's gang and "Slippery Brit" Rothschild's gang. The two gangs faced off. Most of the other gangs went over to "Slippery Brit" Rothschild's gang: the Mellon Gang; the Morgan gang. Things looked bad for the Rockefeller gang. The gangs had their showdown at High Midnight; they didn't want the showdown to be seen. They walked toward each other, in darkest night, from both ends of the eastern big-city. They'd both added mean-looking hired hands to their payrolls: lawyers, and accountants who carried the latest, rapid-fire, calculating machines. Then suddenly Marshall Teddy appeared. In a voice which brooked no defiance, Teddy said, slow and sure, "I'm a-gonna clean up this here town." Marshall Teddy drew his big gun (it was labeled "U.S. Government"). He fired several shots at the Rockefeller gang. One witness later said it sounded like "an anti-trust assault." The Rockefeller gang, wounded, fled the scene. Their gang, after that, was broken up into separate gangs -- for awhile.
