TOKYO, Feb. 19, 1999 (Agence France Presse) -- A Tokyo publisher has
shelved plans to launch the Japanese version of an international best-seller
on Japan's wartime atrocities in Nanjing [then the capital of China]. The
book, which has already sold 500,000 copies in the United States, has
inflamed Japanese revisionists here who say they can find no evidence of a
massacre of Chinese civilians by Japanese troops in December 1937 in
Nanjing. China says 300,000 civilians were massacred when Japanese
troops embarked on an orgy of destruction, pillage, rape and murder after
taking Nanjing. In the Sunday Times (21 ii '99, Books), author J. G. Ballard
-- who suffered under the Japanese -- provides a graphic account of live
Chinese being used for bayonet practice and being forced to rape their own
children. The six-week mayhem in Nanjing after the 90,000 Chinese defending
troops had all been rounded up and killed was much photographed by proud
Japanese and reported in Japanese newspapers. One paper carried a story
about officers with the Imperial Army being involved in a "CONTEST TO KILL
FIRST 100 CHINESE BY BEHEADING." Ballard says there were huge dykes of
Chinese corpses piled along the Yangtse.
Were the Japanese psychopaths? No, concludes Ballard. "Faced with a
threat to themselves, human beings become cruel and dangerous." Yet it is
not clear what the threat was to Japanese soldiers once Nanjing had fallen
to them. Altogether, Ballard reckons that the Japanese killed 10 million
civilian Chinese during 1937-45. Visiting Nazi leaders were shocked at the
savagery.
