<< Teo, I gotta disagree on this. I have absolutely no sympathy for the idiots
who endanger other people--who "spoil someone else's day forever," as my wife
puts it--by driving drunk or high. Taking their cars away immediately, and
*keeping* the cars until there's a verdict in the case instead of putting
them
right back out on the street, makes eminent good sense, and I am amazed that
no one thought of it before. And if somebody borrows your car, gets drunk,
and
smashes into someone else, damn right you're as responsible as the drunk
driver, and you deserve to have your car confiscated. >>
Putting the offender in jail eliminates the need to confiscate the car.
Anyway, what's to prevent the driver from renting a car when his/hers has been
confiscated? If I loan someone my car, I am then responsible for anything
they may do while it's in their possession? EEgads.
Confiscating one person's car can have an ill effect on their family.
We're punishing a whole slew of people here.
In NY, apparently, you don't need to be found guilty....only if you are
accused, you lose your car. If that doesn't scare you, well.....
But, now that we're on the subject of one person's behavior threatening
others, perhaps we should sew the mouths of all smokers shut? And if anyone
should sell someone a pack of smokes, well, they deserve to have their mouths
sewn shut, too.
These are reasonable methods of creating a non-threatening world in which to
live. To the devil with the Constitution! It's only an old piece of paper
anyway.....
