-Caveat Lector-

Inside Scientology is the title of an A&E documentary which was aired last
night from 8 to 10pm. It gave a brief history of Hubbard, including his
involvement and seances with Aleister (spelling) Crowley which according to
Jon Attack, the purpose of which was to incarnate a demon spirit into an
unborn child; Scientology's leaders say he was on some intelligence mission.
Hubbard lived in the height of luxury and was, according to several people
who'd left the group/cult?, a brutal and vicious tyrant who enjoyed
humiliating and punishing his followers for making the slightest mistake.
Hubbard bought several large ships and started taking long cruises in which
he'd staff the ship with the most dedicated Scientologists, but there would
still be cruel punishments inflicted on many, such as locking them in the brig
for extended periods of time, throwing them overboard, to be fished out later;
Hubbard would often explode into mad rages which he would vent on his members.
Jon Atack gave an interesting account which clearly illustrates Hubbards
narcissism and demi-god complex. While shooting a movie, Hubbard had six
assistants, one was holding his chair, one was holding the ashtray, one was
holding a pen etc. The member in charge of the chair was sent to correctional
camp for months for the "crime" of not having Hubbards chair ready in time.

I found the critics of Scientology, all of them had been members for many
years, were far more convincing than the leaders, or people currently
involved, who talked about finding a new "clarity" of thought and
decisesiveness; what they didn't tell you is how much they had spent obtaining
this "spiritual awakening." Scientology is *very* expensive, counselling
sessions are upwards of $200 an hour, ( Jon Atack told of ex-members who owe
the organization millions of dollars, and have been paying back this money for
years) and each stage takes many hours to complete. The Scientologist's giving
these sessions make a few dollars a week plus room and board, the vast
majority of money go's to P.R. for Scientology, sueing people and newspapers
for printing anything derogatory about Scientology, investigating and
excoriating it's major critics and using any means fair and foul to shut them
up; above all of course, the leaders live a life of luxury.

John Travolta, Kirsty Alley, Isaac Hayes were wheeled out to tell us how great
Scientology is, and I'm sure for them it's a hell of a lot better than the
average member working his derriere' off for slave wages. It seems Travolta
has great intentions and comes across as a peace loving and compassionate
person, having said that, he wasn't asked the most important questions, which
are, "Have you investigated this organization independently? Have you found
out what it's like for the average member of Scientology? Isn't it your
responsibility John, to know everything about an organization which you
represent, an organization which uses your name in promoting itself throughout
the world? John, can the average person affford tens of thousands of dollars
in order to advance through Scientology?

Two of the best quotes from ex-members were as follows;

Scott Mayer says;
" People were living in misery, they weren't getting what they were supposed
to be getting which was spiritual enlightenment, I never heard them use the
word God once in all of that time. I never saw a church service, all I ever
did see was people worked into the ground to make money for Hubbard and after
a while I just couldn't stomach it any more."

Robert Vaughn Young says;

( on leaving Scientology ) It's like getting on a boat, pushing off from shore
and not even knowing what's out there, and not even knowing if there's an edge
of the world you might fall off, but all you know is I would rather die on the
open sea's, and die a free man, than die inside that organization, with, what
I've come to see as-as just complete totalitarian mind control."

My conclusions are Scientology is a mendacious money grabbing con game run by
charlatans and meglomaniacs, much like the founder was. Gavin.
