THE WAR AGAINST US

Largely ignored by media conglomerates has been a
startling increase in domestic military activity.
Here is a round-up of some recent developments:

-- A year and a half ago, police in Alameda CA got
calls from 200 residents, many near an elementary
school, who were freighted by the sound of explosives
and machine gun fire during a war game exercise.
According to Gar Smith in the Bay Guardian, "Alameda
mayor Ralph Appezzato apologized to residents and
vowed never to allow unannounced military tests on
the former [Alameda military] base, which was closed
in 1997."

-- Now Appezzato, along with Oakland mayor Jerry
Brown, "is welcoming another simulated military
operation, a four-day event that will involve nearly
1,600 marines, navy sailors, and support personnel,
dozens of helicopter trips from Alameda to Oakland,
24,000 rounds of blank ammunition, and about 60
'flashbang' grenades. This time, the plans were
announced a full six weeks before the exercise."
Brown, who has been unfazed by community opposition,
refused even to comment on the Bay Guardian story.
His press agent said, "On this subject, our
respective positions are so far apart that further
discussion would be unproductive." Brown has praised
the exercise for bringing at last $4.5 million into
the city's economy -- a claim denied in a KPFA debate
with the mayor by city council member Nancy Nadel who
argued, "The only economic boost is to our
prostitutes." Efforts to block the exercise, which is
scheduled to begin on March 14, continue.

-- Among the troops being used for the rash of urban
exercises are the Night Stalkers, who specialize in
such theatrics as seeing how far into a town they can
fly in their helicopters without any citizens calling
911. It has been confirmed that the Night Stalkers --
despite ridicule by the media -- fly unmarked, black
helicopters.

-- David Bresnahan of WorldNet Daily, who has done
the best reporting on these domestic military
exercises, notes that Night Stalkers recently carried
Delta Force soldiers in and out of numerous towns in
Texas over a two week period. Live fire was used in
civilian areas, one building was nearly destroyed,
and another significantly damaged. Writes Bresnahan:
"Residents, who were not warned of the event, were
reported to be extremely frightened. A retirement
home only a few hundred feet from the exercise,
reported many elderly people were fearful that the
world was coming to an end and were under beds
crying. The sound of machine gun fire and explosives
continued for two hours."

-- Bresnahan quotes an Army press agent as saying
that "before we even rolled into Texas we did a
thorough risk assessment and a safety study to ensure
risks to the local population is minimized. ~~~ We do
this type of training in urban areas because of the
increased urbanization of the world."

MICKEY MOUSE POLITICS

Columnist Norman Solomon reports that Trent Lott has
thrown his weight behind a bill that would extend the
copyright for Mickey Mouse 20 years beyond what is
currently permitted under the law. The copyright is
held by Disney, which has sales revenues of $2
billion a month. Disney has been pretty effective at
protecting its copyright. Solomon recounts how a book
by a couple of Chilean democrats, called "How to Read
Donald Duck," sold 500,000 copies around the world,
but only a few got into the US after Disney argued
the work, which was an attack on corporate cultdure,
represented a copyright invasion. In 1975 Customs
seized a shipment of the English translation.

GETTING BACK TO THE NATION'S BUSINESS

Matt Drudge is reporting that the first couple has
recently decided on a trial separation. "They have
gone through a separation like this before," one
former Clinton adviser who has remained close to the
couple tells the Drudge Report. "They always come
back to each other... however, this time, it looks
damn serious." One active secret service agent told
the Drudge Report that the Clintons have been
fighting almost non-stop. "They may look like they
are together, like a couple, they are not." He is
planning to retire as a result of the domestic
conflict.

Meanwhile Fox News has reported that the abrupt end
to the first family's ski trip and Mrs. Clinton's
absence from the president's Central America trip was
a result of the Clinton's marital problems. Fox's
Rita Cosby: "Sources tell Fox News the first couple
had a shouting match, which left Hillary Clinton
storming out of the room saying she wanted her bags.
~~~ A Clinton family friend tells Fox News that the
first couple barely speak in private, that quote,
'They have nothing to talk about anymore. The only
thing they have in common is Chelsea.'"
Prosecutor Mark Barrett mentioned the president and
Hillary Rodham Clinton 10 times during his 35-minute
opening statement in the Susan McDougal trial. He
pointed out that aside from McDougal, "the other two
people who might know about these events ... reside
in the White House."
Paula Jones cases investigator Rick Lambert has told
Carl Limbacher of the NewsMax of a strange
conversation he had with former Clinton bodyguard
Barry Spivey, who -- Lambert says -- remains a
Clinton loyalist. Spivey insisted on meeting Lambert
on a deserted road deep in the Arkansas backwoods.
There he told of a time he was flying with Clinton
over southeast Arkansas. Writes Limbacher: "The
trooper noticed a blackened patch amidst the greenery
below that, surprisingly, Clinton recognized. That
patch was all that was left of an estate that had
burned to the ground in the mid-80s. According to the
trooper, Clinton began reminiscing about rumors of
his involvement with the woman of the house, a
onetime 'Penthouse pet.' Her husband, Spivey said,
was involved in a pornography ring. Clinton explained
to Spivey, ' You know that mansion just burned down
right on top of them.' Years later, Spivey remains
struck by one thing: the eerie expression that
crossed Clinton's face as he spoke those words."
IT'S CATCHING
CNN's WOLF BLITZER: What do you have to bring to this
that [Bill Bradley] doesn't necessarily bring to this
process?"
AL GORE: I'll be offering my vision when my campaign
begins, and it'll be comprehensive and sweeping, and
I hope that it'll be compelling enough to draw people
toward it. ~~~ I've traveled to every part of this
country during the last six years. ~~~ During my
service in the United States Congress, I took the
initiative in creating the Internet."
Wired points out that Gore was 21 at the time and
would not enter Congress for another eight years.
people were included among the unemployed:  From 4.3%
to 5.6%, or 1.3 points.
incarcerated black males were included among the
LAND OF THE FREE
Sidney Gottlieb, who directed CIA drug experiments on
hundreds of unwitting prisoners, mental patients, and
college students in the 1950s and 60s, has died at
the age of 80. The project, called MKUltra, killed
one subject, drove others mad or left still others
with psychological problems. Gottlieb later admitted
that the experiments had been useless. Gottlieb also
was involved in various  CIA assassination attempts
during the Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations.
The National Writers Union has called upon the NEA
chair William Ivey to reverse his abrupt cancellation
of an already approved $15,000 grant to help a small
El Paso publisher print a bilingual edition of a
children's book written by former university
professor Rafael Sebastian Guillen Vicente, the
masked pipe-smoking "Subcomandante Marcos" of the
Zapatista movement. NWU president Jonathan Tasini
noted that the grant had gone through NEA's normal
year-long approval process, including review by a
board that includes six federal lawmakers. All NEA
funds were to go to the publisher for printing and
graphic expenses and none to the Zapatistas. The
illustrated children's book, "The Story of Colors,"
was originally published in Spanish in Mexico in
1997. Its message of tolerance of differences in
colors and ideas, conveyed through a Mayan elder's
folk tale of how the gods gave the world colors and
pinned them on the tailfeathers of the macaw parrot
to remind people of how many different colors there
are, has won praise on both sides of the border.
FIELD NOTES
APB ON-LINE:  A fascinating site dealing with crime
and police matters. Among other things, you can
listen in on major city police radios. Recently added
are FBI files on famous people ranging from Billie
Holliday to Vincent Foster. APB reports: "The most
mysterious parts of the file are two documents from
the FBI's electronic surveillance database -- or EARS
(ELSUR automated records system), a system that
tracks all electronic monitoring. These heavily
censored pages reference surveillance, telephone or
video records that were not released by the FBI. In
addition to the censored portions of those other
released documents, 56 pages are being withheld
entirely. Some of the report is being withheld at the
request of independent prosecutor Kenneth Starr. The
remaining 592 pages cover material dating back as far
as 1966.
