Calder's March 16, 1930 THIS-DAY-IN-HISTORY -Soviet Union- Joseph Stalin issues orders to wipe out the two million or so "kulaks" or rich farmers, so that they, who may number up to 10 million people including their families, can be "liquidated as a class." This is the latest move in Stalin's collectivization plan. Already it is believed that kulaks are being deported to Siberia while their property is turned over to collective farms. Instead of cooperating with authorities, kulaks are slaughtering their cattle, destroying their farm machinery and burning their crops. The kulaks had done much to feed the country during Lenin's New Economic Policy but now that they are out of business, there are reports that collectivization has eliminated 35% of the total stock of cattle, and a serious famine is expected later this year. Stalin is believed to be actively seeking aid from abroad.
