philosopher and academic who was the only layman authorized to take part in
the Second Vatican Council, has died at age 98. Guitton, the oldest member
of the Academie Francaise, died at the Val-de-Grace hospital in Paris. He
was the author of some 30 works, mostly focusing on the relationship between
Catholicism and modern thought. He also was a painter, journalist and novel-
ist. Guitton was close to several French presidents, and met frequently with
