The History of the Epsilon Epsilon Chapter of Beta Theta Pi

Beta Theta Pi is both fairly new to the University of Georgia and fairly
old at the same time. While the Epsilon Epsilon chapter itself is less
than a decade old, the General Fraternity has roots over a century old
at the University of Georgia with the Mystic Seven Society.

The University of Georgia chapter was sponsored by the Gamma Eta chapter
at Georgia Tech. In October of 1983 Boyd Baker and Greg Hunnicutt formed
a group of students interested in becoming Betas and held two interviews
with the General Fraternity in the Russell Hall dorm. About six months
later the group of young men were officially granted colony status at a
regional workshop in Atlanta. The initiation of our founders took place
on May 18, 1984. Their numbers include:

EE 1 Kenneth Gregory Hunnicutt
EE 2 James Boyd Baker
EE 3 Ronald Scott Coddington
EE 4 Mark Stephen Vander Zouwen
EE 5 Ronald Cartee Lewis
EE 6 Paul Calvin White
EE 7 Michael Joseph Coddington
EE 8 Duffy James Dolan
EE 9 David William Smith

Next, we secured a house at 357 South Milledge Avenue and moved in over
the summer of 1984. We have lived there ever since.

The Georgia colony participated in its first rush in the fall of 1984
and pledged ten men.

On Wednesday night, August 6, 1986, on the 147th General Convention in
Scottsdale, Arizona, the Georgia colony petitioned and received chapter
status. Formal installation took place in Phi Kappa Hall on February 7,
1987. We received the chapter designation of Epsilon Epsilon.

In our first year as a chapter, the Epsilon Epsilon chapter received the
coveted Sisson Award. We are the only chapter that has ever won the
Sisson in its first year of exsistence. We have since received the
Sisson Award nine out of our eleven years of existence. On April 29,
1994, we initiated our 200th member into our halls and currently go up
to 296.

Today the Epsilon Epsilon chapter faces the daunting challenge of
finding a new home. We currently rent the house we have and are
desperately looking for a place to buy. The Chapter is saving every
penny in a house fund and we have recently increased dues to try and
raise money. We have a Housing Corp which is looking for ways to get us
into a new house. Unfortunately money is the biggest obstacle.

The Epsilon Epsilon chapter will continue its tradtion of excellence
that our nine founding fathers created.
