OPINION: ONLINE CAMPAIGNS MAKE GAINS
    FOR WHITE HOUSE HOPEFULS

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Supporters and critics of the two major
Democrat presidential candidates for the Year 2000 are online in
    growing numbers.
With their own Web sites, newsgroups and bulletin boards, former New

Jersey Senator Bill Bradley <http://billbradley.com> and Vice
President
Al Gore <http://www.gore2000.com/> have hit the ground running.
"The Internet will be to the 2000 campaign what television was to
the
1960 campaign," said a spokesperson for GOP presidential hopeful
John Kasich, in a recent interview. At the same time, candidates
from
both parties are recognizing the importance of online campaign
efforts.
Offering both the good, bad and neutrality on various candidates,
many
predict the Internet will play an important role in helping organize

effective grassroots support for the upcoming 2000 presidential
    elections.
While candidate supporters have erected favorable Web sites, there
are
still other sites that offer various Gore gaffes
<http://gargaro.com/algore.html>, as well as offbeat satires found
at
    <http://www.washingtonpest.com/quiz_no_JS.html>.
According to Paul Westmoreland of Austin, Tex., who moderates an
online George Bush 2000 discussion group, the Internet is likely to
play
an key role in the upcoming elections.
"[The Internet] could certainly make the difference in a close
election,
which means it must be used well," he said. "It will certainly be
used to
damage campaigns that do not take it seriously."
