-Caveat Lector- Israel Warns of Independent Kosovo LOD, Israel (AP) -- Foreign Minister Ariel Sharon said Tuesday that an independent Kosovo could become a base for Islamic terrorism and further undermine stability in the Balkans. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu quickly distanced himself from Sharon, saying the foreign minister was expressing his personal views. Netanyahu said Israel fully supported the NATO bombings of Yugoslavia which has been fighting attempts by ethnic Albanians in the Kosovo province to win autonomy. Opposition leaders accused the Netanyahu government of increasing Israel's isolation by failing to stand by NATO and the United States. Addressing Jewish leaders in New York on Monday, Sharon was quoted as saying that Kosovo might eventually win independence and then become part of ``a greater Albania that will turn into a center of Islamic terrorism in Europe.'' Asked about his remarks in a telephone interview with Israel TV's Channel Two on Tuesday, Sharon said that while he supported the right of every people to self-determination, independence for Kosovo might be undesirable. ``If a big block of Muslim countries develops in this area, this could be the center of Islamic terrorism and the seed for this already exists there,'' Sharon said. ``This might lead to instability.'' Earlier Tuesday, Israel sent two relief planes, including one carrying a field hospital and doctors, to the Balkans to aid the swelling number of ethnic Albanian refugees fleeing Kosovo.
