Thousands escape scene of ethnic carnage

Thousands of refugees poured out of rural areas of
Indonesian Borneo yesterday, fleeing ethnic bloodshed
which has left about 90 dead in less than a week.
They left behind them scenes of horror including
decapitations and in one instance the cooking and
eating in a market place of body parts of one victim.
Meanwhile, makeshift shelters had been prepared for
the mainly Madurese settlers evacuated to Pontianak,
the capital of West Kalimantan province, from various
areas in the embattled Sambas district, residents and the
military said.
The carnage had led to the deaths of about 90 people in
the past six days, said Lieutenant-Colonel Tukimin,
spokesman for a taskforce established to restore order.
About 40 others had been injured.
The Suara Pembaruan daily put the toll in clashes
between Malays and Dayak tribesmen against settlers
from Madura Island at 96.
Thousands of people had fled the violence, with 5,586
ethnic Madurese, mostly the elderly, women and
children, being evacuated to the provincial capital at
the weekend, Colonel Tukimin said.
Yesterday, about 1,800 refugees were evacuated to
Pontianak by land and sea from the town of Sambas,
while about 3,000 others were awaiting evacuation at a
military barracks and the port.
In neighbouring Pemangkat town, about 750 refugees
were evacuated in trucks to Pontianak, 125km away,
said a local official.
On Saturday, indigenous Dayaks and ethnic Malays
paraded through the small town of Tebas to the cheers
of residents waving three freshly severed heads.
Yesterday, hunting musket shots rang out in a Sambas
sub-district, 50km northeast of Singkawang, as
thousands of armed Malays and Dayaks hunted down Madurese.
A small group of police and soldiers tried in vain to
disperse the mob.
In grisly scenes yesterday, the body of one man was
burned at the market place in Sambas and shredded bits
of his liver were offered to the public. Many accepted
and ate them, in the tribal tradition of eating parts of
one's enemies.
In Sukarame, near Sambas, an elderly man sat on his
motorcycle, holding a severed ear in his left hand and
a machete in the other.
The head of one of three men beheaded in Pemangkat
on Saturday was on top of an oil drum on the side of
the main road into the town, in a grim warning to
Madurese.
More than 6,400 refugees were expected to arrive in
Pontianak soon, officials were quoted as saying in the
Kompas newspaper, swelling the ranks of the thousands
who had already taken shelter in military and public
installations.
Hundreds of others have sought refuge with relatives
in Pontianak.
The Indonesian Government aims to rebuild the
riot-torn city of Ambon, wracked by months of
Muslim-Christian clashes that claimed 200 lives
and left millions of dollars worth of damage,
Maluku Governor Saleh Latuconsina said yesterday.
More than 2,500 of the 3,680 houses damaged in
the violence would be rebuilt, he said.
