"There are white niggers. I've seen a lot of white
niggers in my time; I'm going to use that word." ~~Sen.
Robert Byrd (D-WV)

Did anyone notice a code was breached?

The backlash is underway. Well, OK, it isn't. But
the warnings of a backlash are underway. As the
Canadian Press reports, "Matthew Coon Come,
national chief of the Assembly of First Nations,
is concerned about a possible backlash against
aboriginals." The remarks of Senator David
Ahenakew O.C. about how Hitler had the right idea
frying all those Jews could, Mr. Coon Come fears,
"provide fodder for those critical of First
Nations." The tragedy of Mr. Ahenakew's real,
actual intolerance is that it could hypothetically
provoke even more intolerance from the white man.

Well, I don't suppose Mr. Ahenakew will be being
presented to the Queen again anytime soon. The
perks of being one of the hyphenated state's
ethnic ward-heelers are lost to him for the
foreseeable future. But I doubt the Mounties are
serious about charging him with "Holocaust denial"
or in this case Holocaust celebration, or whatever
the crime is. "Hate crimes" laws are there to nail
recalcitrant old white guys like the late Doug
Collins, not to hear grievances by one wing of the
Rainbow Coalition against another.

As readers may know, I strongly dislike "hate
crimes" laws. If Mr. Ahenakew thinks it was a
swell idea to kill six million Jews, he should
have the right to say so. After all, it's only
because he said it in public that he's in trouble.
If he hadn't decided to unburden himself, he'd
still be on the Rideau Hall Christmas card list,
getting the first dance with Prince Edward at the
opening of the Swift Current First Nations
Cultural Centre, sitting at the top table for the
gala dinner marking the first anniversary of the
announcement of Jean Chrtien's retirement. But he
spoke up and so we know him.

Mr. Ahenakew's views are rare but not unique. I
get a few of his kindred spirits writing to me
every week, arguing that Hitler's big mistake was
not killing more Jews quicker. That way he'd have
finished the job, and we wouldn't have all these
troublemakers around now. Some of these e-mails
and letters are anonymous. But you'd be surprised
how many aren't. Every society has these people.
The only difference lies in the distance they are
from the centres of power.

What matters in the Middle East is not that
excitable chaps in the street are calling for the
deaths of Jews and Christians, but that the A-list
imams on the state-controlled TV and radio
networks are.

Princess Haifa, the wife of Saudi Arabia's U.S.
Ambassador Prince Bandar, recently found herself
in the spotlight because she'd been making
payments from her Washington bank account to a
woman who'd passed the money on to the September
11th terrorists. It's not that Princess Haifa is a
terrorist herself, but that it's barely two
degrees of separation between her and the mass
murderers.

And that's the significance of David Ahenakew --
not his views on his fellow man, but our view of
him. He's not a grunting troglodyte in some
rooming house round the back of the stockyards
writing letters in green ink to Izzy and the rest
of the Jewish Conspiracy. He's out there in the
sunlight, basking in the approval of the highest
institutions of the Canadian state. Look at the
guy's scrapbook: here's me with Her Majesty,
here's me with Trudeau, here's me at the UN. And
why? The most benign characterization one can make
of Mr. Ahenakew is that he's an utter mediocrity.
As Christie Blatchford pointed out, nothing he'd
done in the years before 1978 merited the Order of
Canada -- an order so illustrious that The Globe
And Mail wants to transform them into an elite
college of cardinals endowed with the right to
elect our head of state from among their number.

President Ahenakew. Has a kind of a ring, doesn't
it?

Mr. Ahenakew must be wondering what hit him. By
all accounts, his thoughts on Hitler, the Jews,
the "goddamned immigrants, East Indians,
Pakistanis, Afghanis, whites and so forth" have
been well aired over the years. As everyone's
making Trent Lott comparisons, here's mine. Re-run
the video of Strom Thurmond's birthday party:
After the usual Viagra and Hooters gags, Senator
Lott says he's proud his state voted for Strom in
1948. There's a bit of nervous laughter -- it's
audibly different from the Viagra yuks -- because
the crowd can sense this is a step in a direction
most of them don't want to go. Strom himself has
long since disavowed his segregationist past.

And then Lott goes and says, if Strom had won, we
wouldn't have had all these problems we'd had over
the years. And that nervous laughter dies. You can
hear an intake of breath. The audience understands
a line has been crossed.

Nothing like that happened at that FSIN meeting.
Mr. Ahenakew was supposed to be addressing health
issues but lurched off instead into his historical
digression. And the crowd took it in their stride,
as if it's perfectly routine for their "respected
elders" to start droning on about how the Jews
started the Second World War. The sense of when a
code has been breached is very important to a
society's health. Senator Lott did not call for
the return of lynching. He didn't say that the
sight of those fellows hanging from trees taught
an important lesson to uppity Nigras. But, even
so, his audience understood. Mr. Ahenakew's
didn't, and that speaks poorly for them, and their
grubby third-rate leaders, just as it spoke poorly
for Hedy Fry when she sat through Professor Sunera
Thobani's post-9/11 rant.

Even when The Saskatoon Star-Phoenix put it in the
paper, the native bigshots still didn't get it.
FSIN Vice-Chief Lawrence Joseph blames the media:
"It's f---ing garbage. What was your intent to
print that story?" he told the paper. "It should
not have even been pursued."

And you can see his point. First Nations
spokesnatives use inflammatory language all the
time. Unlike his equivocating colleagues, Matthew
Coon Come was shrewd enough to offer an
"unconditional" condemnation of the Jew stuff. But
this is the same fellow who in Durban told the UN
Conference on Racism that only last year Canada's
natives had been savagely attacked by "white
mobs." If you make your living telling folks white
mobs are after you, what's the big deal about
throwing the Jews in the mix, too? Needless to
say, the government paid Mr. Coon Come to fly to
Durban to trash his country, just as it has paid
Mr. Ahenakew for most of the past four decades.

That's the difference between us and, say, the
Syrians. State-funded Jew-hating Syrians are pro-
Syrian. But state-funded Jew-hating Canadians,
like Mr. Ahenakew, hate Canada, too. What a fine
testament to our tolerance: Our intolerant bigots
are intolerant even of us, and we don't mind! In
fact, we encourage it! Fire on law enforcement,
and we back away, promising to be more "sensitive"
in our policing.

The Supreme Court of Canada in its April 23rd 1999
ruling that judges must pay "particular attention
to the circumstances of aboriginal offenders" all
but formalized the de facto two-tier justice
system.

If Mr. Ahenakew ever did get to "fry" six million
Jews, the Supreme Court would rule the Nuremberg
war crimes tribunal an infringement of his
aboriginal rights and insist that he can only be
brought before a First Nations "sentencing
circle."

Hitlerian comparisons are cheap, and one should be
wary of them. But Friar Ahenakew started this, so
let's pursue it a little. Hitler's Germany was one
of the great mass grievance cultures of all time:
"All these terrible things have happened," said
Der Fhrer, "but none of it's your fault. It's the
Jews' doing." The modern Middle East: Nothing's
your fault, it's all those Jews. And here in
Canada we've told generations of Indians a similar
story: Poverty? Crime? Health? Unemployment? "None
of it's your fault. It's all our fault." What sort
of people would be attracted to spending their
life milking the frustrations of a permanent
state-sanctioned neo-apartheid victim culture? Oh,
sure, some might be well-meaning public servants,
and more might be the corrupt sleazeballs who've
turned Indian Affairs into one giant sinkhole. But
we shouldn't be surprised if a third category of
openly ugly racists pursues the logic of the
enterprise to its conclusion. In that sense, David
Ahenakew is an exquisitely apt summation of our
disastrous Indian policy.
