Chilling accounts of how ethnic Albanian women and girls were publicly
stripped
then raped by the Serb militia as they tried to leave Kosovo are emerging in
ever greater detail.

Burbuque Kastroti, a 17-year-old girl from Dushanov who travelled with 11
relatives and 12 others in an old lorry from Kosovo to Albania, said she had
seen 30 women stripped and taken away to be raped, at a road block just before
the border. She said: "The militia made them get out of their buses or cars,
tore off their clothes in front of everyone, and then dragged them into the
fields to rape them. We could hear their screams. I will never forget their
cries."

Later at a refugee camp near the border in Albania, some of
the girls confided to Burbuque and her relatives that they had been raped.
"But
the prettiest ones were never seen again," she told La Repubblica, a Rome
newspaper. Burbuque and her young female relatives said they knew some girls
who had been taken away during the attacks on March 27. They said that later,
once inside Albania, at Kukes, the girls had confided to Burbuque and her
female relatives in their age group that they had been raped, but that they
could not face admitting what had happened to their parents.

She said: "They said nothing to their fathers, but only
cried.
But they told me and my sisters everything. For us Albanians it is hard to
explain these things. For a woman, where we come from it is better to die than
to be raped. The girls said a woman they met at Kukes had told them her two
daughters, unable to cope with their shame, had committed suicide several days
earlier after being raped by Serb soldiers in their home in front of her
father. The father had first been ordered to rape his daughters and when he
refused, he was forced to witness the soldiers doing so, before he was
killed."

Horrifying details of gang rape and assaults have appeared in
the Italian media. Talking to Italy's state-run television news at a refugee
camp in Tirana where her family is now staying, Burbuque's uncle, Shefqet
Byzyci, confirmed the accounts of rape given by his niece and daughters, and
said he was prepared to testify in The Hague over the incidents.

Shefqet's daughter Alberta, 15, said she and the other girls
in the lorry managed to escape being raped because her parents and aunt and
uncle had made themselves up "so as to appear vile" to the Serbs. As an extra
precaution, Alberta was made to lay down in the lorry beneath the younger
children. Her cousin Burbuque said: "Before getting to the frontier, all of us
girls got out of our lorry and changed into my father's old work clothes. Then
we took mud from the lorry and smeared it on our faces. We tried to make
ourselves look horrible for when we crossed the frontier." The ruse worked,
although Shefqet Byzyci said that he also paid money. "At each road block I
gave 200 or 300 marks," he said.

Burbuque said she and her sister Libode, 15, together with
her
cousins Aryeta, 18, and Alberta, were among 23 people, mainly females and
children, in their lorry when it was caught in a long queue of vehicles at
Vermice, the pass between Kosovo and Albania. She said: "In the lorry in front
of ours the Serb soldiers made everyone get out apart from the children. The
men were put to one side, the women to the other. Then they took the girls,
and
undressed them: some of them completely, and others, only their skirt or their
top. First they took them into a nearby house where perhaps there was a
restaurant. Then we could hear their screams which came from the fields."

Aryeta said the soldiers, who looked into the lorries with
torches, "laughing among themselves as they poked around", did not take all
the
women away. "If you gave them money or some ring or a gold necklace they would
leave you alone. But if you didn't have anything, they raped you straight
away." According to Alberta, the soldiers chose the youngest. "Rather than
women, they were looking for girls like us. I thought, if they rape me, then
I'll kill myself."

Burbuque said she saw 30 girls being taken away, but two
hours
later, only some of them returned. She said: "Four or five remained there. The
ones who came back did so with their eyes downcast, and their legs and backs
covered in mud. They didn't even have the strength to cry."

Shefqet, who was driving the lorry, his eyes brimming with
tears as he recounted the ordeal before the TV cameras said: "I didn't see
them
being raped with my own eyes." But he said he saw the men and women in front
being separated, and the rest of the chilling scenario together with his
family
and in-laws and nieces and nephews. He said: "I was told what had happened.
Much of it I can't repeat on television. I know some of the girls [who were
raped], and if they said they were raped then I know they were telling the
truth, and I'm ready to go to testify before the Court of Human Rights in The
Hague. I was ready to die for my daughters and nieces. They were looking for
the youngest women, the girls. My wife and I put ourselves in the front line
to
save them."
