-Caveat Lector- Kevorkian Sentenced To 10-25 Years In Prison (Last updated 2:56 PM ET April 13) PONTIAC, Mich. (Reuters) - A U.S. judge Tuesday sentenced Dr. Jack Kevorkian to 10-25 years in prison following his second-degree murder conviction last month for fatally injecting a terminally-ill man. In handing out her sentence, Oakland County Circuit Judge Jessica Cooper told the 70-year-old retired pathologist that he should consider his crusade to legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide to be at an end. Kevorkian earned the nickname "Dr. Death" from helping at least 130 people end their lives since 1990. Kevorkian said he acted to relieve the suffering of Thomas Youk, 52, who suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a fatal illness also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Jurors rejected that defense, agreeing with prosecutors that Kevorkian's actions fit the definition of murder. Cooper's sentence was in line with what prosecutors had requested, but harsher than what the state's probation department had recommended. Defense attorneys, following emotional comments from Youk's widow and brother in support of Kevorkian, had asked that Kevorkian be given a maximum suspended sentence of one year and a day. Cooper also sentenced Kevorkian to 3-7 years for his conviction on the charge of delivering a controlled substance without a license. She rejected a defense motion to release him on bond pending an appeal of the murder conviction. Kevorkian, who began his right-to-die crusade in 1990, was acquitted of assisted suicide charges in three previous trials. A fourth trial ended in a mistrial.
