Health Minister criticized for "anti-Zionistic" and "anti-Jewish" remarks
By Ellis Shuman December 29, 2002

Health Minister Nissim Dahan (Shas) came under attack for comments he made
Saturday night suggesting that only religious Jews should immigrate to Israel. Jewish
Agency chairman Sallai Meridor said he was "ill" over Dahan's comments, which he
described as "anti-Zionistic" and "anti-Jewish." Dahan's spokesman said the
minister's remarks were taken out of context and he was referring to a specific,
hypothetical question.

"Such statements have not been heard since the beginning of Zionism," Meridor
said. "His statement is a serious anti-Zionist utterance. The minister chose to
encourage Jews

not to immigrate to Israel - against the policy of the Israeli government." Meridor
told
Israel Radio that a person like Dahan is not worthy of being a part of the Israeli
government.

At a conference of World Orthodox Jewry leaders in Jerusalem, Dahan explained
that he feared the erosion of the Jewish identity of Israel. "We prefer a Jew overseas
to a gentile in Israel," he said.

Dahan said the Jewish Agency was only interested in the number of people it helped
make Aliyah to Israel, and didn't care if they were Jewish or not. Therefore, Dahan
said, a large percentage of the people who make Aliyah are not Jewish. Dahan
repeated his comments in a Sunday morning interview with Israel Radio.

Interior Minister and Shas party chairman Eli Yishai defended Dahan's position by
warning that allowing stores in Israel to be open and public transportation to run on
the Sabbath, and allowing stores to sell pork products were signs of the danger that
Israel was becoming a secular country with a secular government.

"If Israel is losing its Jewish character, and becoming a secular state, should we
bring here the Jews of the Diaspora, who keep the Torah in their communities, in
order for them to be assimilated in a place where churches are built? It is better to
stay Jewish anywhere else, and not to come to Israel to assimilate," Yishai said.

Dahan was referring to "hypothetical" situation
Dahan's spokesman said Dahan was referring to a hypothetical question posed to
him by the chief rabbi of France. The rabbi presented a situation where a potential
new immigrant from France could end up marrying an Arab woman in Israel, but if he
stayed in France he would ensure himself a Jewish wife, the spokesman said,
according to Yediot Aharonot.

Former deputy foreign minister Michael Melchior (Labor-Meimad) said Dahan's
comments were "serious" and "miserable." The minister's comments were illogical,
Melchior said, because it was much more difficult to remain Jewish in the Diaspora.

"Dahan's statements are a complete distortion of Judaism," said MK Zevulun Orlev
(National Religious Party). "The mitzva of immigrating to Israel is unconditional, and
(Dahan's statements) are a heresy against Zionism. I doubt whether a cabinet
minister who says such things and encourages people not to immigrate to Israel can
be a member of the government."
