Impeachment Vindicated by Judge

"A federal judge Monday held President Clinton in contempt of court for
giving 'intentionally false' testimony...marking the first time that a
sitting president has been sanctioned for disobeying a court order."

- Washington Post, 4/13/99

Once a Liar, Always a Liar

"This is the administration that said, 'everything's going as planned' and
then all of a sudden they have half a million refugees there. ... Things are
not going as planned. They are either lying or they're in a state of total
denial."

- Fred Barnes, Fox News Channel "Special Report, 4/5/99

Those Who Refuse to Learn From History...

"Like Lyndon Johnson, the President whose war he opposed, Mr. Clinton is
making things up as he goes along. ... (Kosovo) is Vietnam-style gradualism,
and an irresponsible use of military force."
- Wall Street Journal editorial, 4/13/99

"The Vietnam syndrome 'is alive and well and residing in the White House.'"
- Dan Goure, military analyst, Chicago Tribune

Vietnam Syndrome

"Former military leaders and policy analysts say the Clinton administration
has repeatedly shown symptoms of the Vietnam syndrome. And, they said, it
now appears so consumed by these self-doubts that it is, ironically,
repeating in Yugoslavia many of the same mistakes made in Southeast Asia a
generation ago."

- Chicago Tribune, 4/13/99

The Powell Doctrine

"The Powell Doctrine (named after former Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Colin
Powell) was a response to Vietnam. It means the military can't be used for
anything but war fighting when the nation's highest security interests are at
stake. I don't believe the Powell Doctrine was ever alive in the State
Department."

- Mackubin T. Owens, former Marine platoon commander in Vietnam and current
instructor at the U.S. Naval War College in Rhode Island, Chicago Tribune,
4/13/99

WH & SOS Ignore Powell Doctrine

"Clinton is in his current predicament, critics in the military said, because
he abandoned the lessons of the Gulf War, lessons embodied in what has become
known as the Powell Doctrine: that American forces should not be committed
unless there is a clear political objective and an exit strategy. And when
they are committed, it should be as an overwhelming force. The Powell
Doctrine is not as highly regarded in the White House or the State Department
as it is in the Pentagon. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright once asked
Powell, 'What is the point of having this superb military...if we can't use
it?'"

- Chicago Tribune, 4/13/99

A Racist War

"Bill Clinton and his North Atlantic Treaty Organization allies are racists,
I presume. Let's be logical. They justified NATO's unprecedented and illegal
attack on a sovereign state on the basis that 2,000 dead in a civil war
constituted a humanitarian crisis sufficient to justify going to war. Well,
700,000 Tutsis were slaughtered -- men, women, children and babies -- in
Rwanda, and that only rated a bit of rhetoric from Clinton and his racist
buddies. By my math, that means that, in their minds, one European life is
more valuable than 350 black lives. These guys are worse racists than some
Union officials during this country's Civil War who, while opposing slavery,
sent black soldiers into battle rather than risking white lives."
- Charley Reese, Orlando Sentinel, 4/6/99

The Saints & Sinners Coalition
"Unlike his father, who sometimes came across as a goody two-shoes, (Texas
Gov. George W.) Bush has shrewdly cultivated a rakish air meant to appeal to
the sort of voters who frequently enjoy detours from the straight and narrow.
The contrast with his teacher's-pet rivals can only be to his advantage.
It's hard to picture Elizabeth Dole or Steve Forbes dancing naked on a bar,
or even in the shower. Marilyn Quayle has said that given a choice between
golf and sex, her husband would choose golf every time. Lamar Alexander and
Gary Bauer give the impression that they never had lust even in their hearts.
But Bush may have found a way to outdo all these candidates in appealing to
religious conservatives. His born-again faith...makes him more than
acceptable to the churchgoing set...Bush has thus cleverly forged the most
formidable possible coalition - saints and sinners."
