"As far as I'm concerned Shalon (the Israeli manufacturer of the black masks) can wrap their machines in plastic. I don't want the ministry buying any more of the black masks." The meeting followed a State Comptroller's investigation at the ministry this week after Ha'aretz reported that a third of the black gas masks issued to the public are not appropriate for the stated purpose. Home Front Commander Maj. Gen. Yosef Mishlav, Brig. Gen. (res.) Sharul Horev, an assistant to the defense minister, and Aharon Marmurush, head of special equipment and purchasing, and top officials from purchasing and budgets attended the meeting about protective kit purchasing. Yaron said he was ready to order another 45,000 black masks, but also demanded a tender be issued for 100,000 Sapphire-style masks with air ventilation systems. A similar decision was made two months ago, but never carried out because of budget problems. A noisy argument broke out when the Home Front commander said the ministry should keep buying Shalon masks. Yaron later told Ha'aretz the new Sapphire masks are much better. As for the Medical Corps being opposed to giving the public Sapphire masks, Yaron said that the corps is divided on the issue. It would be resolved in the near future by a decision to mass manufacture the new masks. The main difference between the two masks is that the black ones are sealed on the face, while the Sapphire masks include hoods, with a ventilation system hanging from the neck. MKRan Cohen, chairman of the Knesset State Comptroller's Committee, also said this week that production of the new masks should begin in the near future. Mishlav said 87 percent of the population has protective kits and since September 2001, the Home Front's teams have equipped 3.1 million people with up-to-date kits. He said that 22 percent of people have prepared a sealed room and by mid- February, every household in the country will get a brochure explaining what to do in an emergency.
