Necromancy

The Truth About Necromancy

Necromancy is a Latin word that literally means
"magick of the dead"; the practices associated with it are some of the oldest
in human history. Indeed the world's oldest profession was not prostitution,
as some would have us believe, but rather the witch doctor. We all were
brought up to respect the dead regardless of what culture we come from. Yet
necromancy is the most feared and least talked about of all the occult arts.
I have observed even among self-proclaimed witches a knee-jerk reaction of
fear and judgment to the mere mention of the term necromancy, after speaking
with them it became clear that they had no idea what it even was. Necromancy
brings images to the mind of darkly clad fiends in cemeteries at midnight
performing bizarre rituals to raise the dead. Well I have been one of those
darkly clad individuals and have been chased by hillbillies in pickup trucks
with shotguns for my trouble. Was I there trying to raise the dead? Well if
you know of a way to do it that actually works I'd like to here about it.
The true necromancer is not trying to raise the dead but rather
trying to speak to them in a language that has no words. What words would
work, being dead they don't have access to a larynx. While I have seen
possession work I don't recommend it for any save a devotee who really really
wants to. Necromancy is interwoven into our religions, our
traditions, and our lives, and it has been my experience that many people
choose to deny the
very obvious when they don't like the way it sounds.

                                                        Theology

The first thing one should understand is that unlike most
forms of magick necromancy is not a religion in and of itself. It exists
inside all religions, whenever the spirit of the dead is actively invoked
necromancy is in use. Many theologians would violently
disagree with this without having any real logical ground to stand on. The
Prophets of old
have always led the religions of the world in all their ritual and the vast
majority of the time they were quite dead. Some may argue that this is a
gross oversimplification serving only to support a feeble position, I know
because I have heard it before. What is Necromancy? As defined previously the
word means magick of the dead, and this simply crops up in all kinds of
uncomfortable places. The Jewish Passover ritual is taken largely from the
book of Exodus, accept that a plate of food and goblet of wine is set aside
and untouched. This place setting is ignored until the prayer to Elijah the
wondering Prophet, were the door is literally opened for him. Given the
tradition of what was going on in the land of Egypt at the time opening the
door is a pretty big deal. One of the great Jewish blasphemies committed by
Jesus of Nazareth was when he passed the bread and wine from the Elijah
setting and set the precedent for every orthodox Christian mass ever since.
The practice of deifying the king of Egypt was in and of itself based in
necromancy. Previous traditions throughout North Africa and the Middle East
deified kings after their death; the Pharaohs simply didn't want to wait to
die before attaining godhood so they simply usurped the sun. These trends
exist not only in western theology, for Buddha, according to the sutras, was
not a god when he lived as a man. Yet many modern sects of Buddhism address
their prayers to Buddha not divinity. To separate necromancy from religion
one would have to dispose of every tradition within it. Fundamentalist
Christian sects like to exclude themselves from such equations, yet they all
engage in the right of baptism, which is death and rebirth named after the
supposed creator of the ritual John the Baptist, another dead guy. Islam also
likes to hold itself exempt from such concern, because they do not have
graven images. Yet the Koran itself skips Genesis and ignores Revelations and
only uses the parts with all the dead Prophets, usually while they are in
spiritual contact with other dead Prophets. The immortals, this is something
of a touchy subject for some people so lets set a few things straight.
Personally, I believe there is no such thing as an immortal, if one or more
did exist they would have nothing more than my pity. There have been stories
in reputable books of Alchemy in the east and west having through their arts
achieved immortality in differing points in history. One must remember,
however, that Alchemy used symbols and metaphors for everything because of
the dangers of religious intolerance, elixir of immortality=communal wine,
water of life=beer, etc…There are many other stories of mythic creatures,
the walking dead, soulless hell spawn, wondering beasts, quest knights,
wondering Jews, prophets, priests, and kings that are supposed to be
immortal. If you are and feel like gloating e-mail back to me otherwise act
like normal spirits of myth and legend. Necromancy is more based in theology
than superstition, Moses choose to tell the children of Israel to throw out
there "Teraphim" their "house gods", but no mention was made to the Ancestors
like Abraham, or Israel, or even Moses himself.

                                                  Ancestral Worship

In most shamanistic and tribal systems of theology, your
ancestors are your protectors, teachers, guides, and in some cases deities.
To understand ones ancestors and to hear what they have to say to you is one
of the ultimate quests in shamanism. Western science has defined these sort
of practices as "Ancestral Worship" mainly to separate it from the practices
they themselves engage in regularly. These same people pray to saints in
church, hang pictures of long dead loved ones on the walls, and many of them
engage in the practice of Spiritism. As a long time practitioner of the
Occult arts and necromancy in particular I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt
that Spiritism only comes in two forms,
bullshit, and dangerous. Yes the bullshit one is easy to see, but dangerous?
In more sophisticated forms of ancestral invocation like Shintoism, personal
effects of the dead are used and a special place in the home is set aside for
them. The emotional bond that existed in life is reinforced on a daily basis
after death. With long dead ancestors these shrines will
have been used for generations by the family. In Spiritism, one simply opens
themselves wide and asks the dead person to join them. If you are going to
accept the fact that spirits exist at all, you have to take what comes with
it. The number of Gods, Goddess's, Fairies, Ghosts, Angels, Demons,
Demi-urges, elementals, dead people, and lesser spirits is so incredibly vast
that getting hold of any one particular one is like trying to find a needle
in a football stadium packed full of needles. Any method for invoking
ancestors that actually works involves using emotional ties to the living,
the rest is based entirely on the tradition followed, the available
materials, and most importantly the emotional state of both the living and
the dead trying to communicate. Bullshiters also use emotional ties, but in
order to get the living to unknowingly inform them of what their dead relat
ive would typically act like and thereby make their dramatization appear more
beleivable. When the living are acting on pure rage we call them criminals or
insane, when the dead are in a rage we call them ghosts, so it isn't all that
hard to see when the best time to avoid them is. Building the emotional
bridge between yourself and the dead of your choice gives one an psychic
meter with which to gage any other spirit one may run across. In many systems
of belief that involve spirit communication apprentices or taught one system
or another of ancestral worship before being allowed to pursue relations with
more abstract or mythological spirits. The true secret to simple tribal
essence and purity is the emotional bond with the dead. Its religious in that
it takes believe in an afterlife to even consider it, it is cultural from the
shear emotional power, it is only Occult when it is done on purpose.
                                                   Interesting note:
There is a theory in animal genetics that attempts to
explain the phenomenon of instinct, race memory. It suggests that at the time
of conception any given offspring is given
the genetic memory ingrams of the two parents as it exists up to that point.
There is a great deal of genetic evidence to support this that can be
researched elsewhere in detail. The
point goes that not only are all the memories of your ancestors in you but
also all of the previous creatures you evolved from.

                                                Practical Application

If you have managed to stay with me up to this point then
you must be wondering how one goes about speaking to the dead. Well don't
expect grandpa to jump out of his crypt just because you said the magick
word. Now most people familiar with film and TV have seen the little oriental
style shrine to a dead loved one, consisting usually of a picture in a frame
a couple of tapers and an incense boat. Although not really following any
tradition something like this is quite usable and does fall under the
anthropological definition of a tribal fetish. Fetish in this case refers to
folk art of cultural or religious significance not off the wall sexual
practices as it is in pop culture. The necromantic talisman or fetish is
easily constructed, for best use it should be made of personal items and it
should be as creative as possible. Below are examples of necromantic
fetishes from Afro-Caribbean pseudo-tribal culture, it is included here to
give you an idea of what to do. Remember to not expect any relative in
particular to show up, these fetishes and the rituals that go with them are
made to conjure the ancestral spirits, family guardians, ancient elders, and
spirit guides not your dead uncle Frank. The ancient practices are meant to
honor the dead and to keep us in touch with the nobler aspects of our past
and to gain knowledge of the sins of the father. It is unfortunate for many
who seek fulfillment that 99.9% of psychics, spirit medians, clairvoyants,
and fortune tellers who actually make a living at it are frauds. Occasionally
people are born with gifts for this sort of thing but I have found that most
of them would simply like to be left alone. I encourage anyone who has an
interest in necromancy to go a find some old family heirlooms, gifts that
family has given you while on holiday someplace exotic, take these and a
little creative arts and crafts just like in grammar school and put a little
heart into it. It isn't really necessary to sacrifice an animal to it,
sacrifice a little time and energy, try simple stuff like a shot of Rum and a
cigarette. The worth of it speaks in the doing, those that have know, those
that haven't either wonder or fear-which are you?
