February 1 2003 The baby girl alleged to be the first human clone is in hiding with her parents in Israel for fear that US authorities would separate them, according to an Israeli spokesman for the Raelian religious sect. But whether a baby exists at all - let alone evidence that she is a clone - has never been proved in the bizarre saga of the baby called Eve. The Israel connection is the latest twist in the story told by Clonaid, a company that announced in Florida two days after Christmas that it had delivered the world's first human clone. The company reneged on promises to prove the claim through DNA testing, fuelling speculation that the whole thing was a hoax. Clonaid's chief, Brigitte Boisselier, has said the baby was cloned from an unidentified American woman. On Wednesday she testified in a Florida court that the baby was now in Israel. The religious sect behind Clonaid, the Raelians, believes life on Earth was created by space aliens. The Israeli spokesman for the group, Kobi Drori, said yesterday that the baby was in Israel because the parents were probably Jewish, which would give them automatic rights to enter and seek immediate citizenship. Authorities in Israel, where cloning is illegal, said they had no information on the matter. An Israeli Interior Ministry spokeswoman, Tova Elinson, said that without a name "there is no way to check". Mr Drori said Eve's 31-year-old mother had gone through 10 years of unsuccessful invitro fertilisations before turning to cloning.
