Implications of childhood sexual abuse for adult borderline personality
disorder and complex posttraumatic stress disorder. McLean LM, Gallop R.
Am J Psychiatry 2003 Feb; 160(2):369-71 OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether women with a history of early-onset
sexual abuse or those with late-onset sexual abuse were more likely to meet
diagnostic criteria for both borderline personality disorder and complex
posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). METHOD: The Revised Diagnostic
Interview for Borderlines and the Trauma Assessment Package were
administered to 65 women from three outpatient clinics in a metropolitan
area. Thirty-eight subjects met criteria for early-onset abuse, while 27
subjects met criteria for late-onset abuse. RESULTS: The diagnoses of both
borderline personality disorder and complex PTSD were significantly higher
in women reporting early-onset abuse than in those with late-onset abuse.
The trauma variables sexual abuse and paternal incest were significant
predictors of both diagnoses. CONCLUSIONS: In contrast to those with
comorbid diagnoses, some women with a history of childhood sexual abuse may
be extricated from the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder and
subsumed under that of complex PTSD.

Judge rejects most charges in suit against former priest By Michael Shaw Of the Post-Dispatch 01/30/03 "Schwaegel resigned from the priesthood in 1993, and, a year later confessed to being a sex addict after being arrested for offering sex to adult men at highway rest stops in St. Louis County. He worked for a while after resigning, but is now retired and lives in the Metro East area.  Hemmer filed the federal suit two years ago, alleging 21 counts of negligence, assault and other transgressions. Proud noted that the case is in federal court because the parties live in different states, so Illinois' strict statute of limitations for sexual abuse claims takes precedence. Illinois requires that suits seeking damages for childhood sexual abuse must be filed within two years of a person's discovery that the abuse occurred. Proud said most of Hemmer's allegations did not meet the deadline." http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/stories.nsf/news/1B10B3258F753E6886256CBE00572C8E?OpenDocument&highlight=2%2CJudge%2Crejects%2Cmost%2Ccharges%2Cin%2Csuit%2Cagainst%2Cformer%2Cpriest&headline=Judge+rejects+most+charges+in+suit+against+former+priest

two from L Moss Sharman Files: Cardinal tried to help accused man get ordained  by Robin Washington and Tom Mashberg  2/5/03 "Top aides to Bernard Cardinal Law outlined a plan to pave the way to priesthood for a seminarian hit with sexual abuse allegations, despite church rules prohibiting accused candidates from becoming ordained, according to files released yesterday. The internal memos indicate Law and his deputies - including Msgr. Michael Smith Foster, the Boston Archdiocese's top canon lawyer - knew of multiple allegations against Pope John XXIII seminarian Mark Doherty but nonetheless acquiesced in allowing him to be ordained in the Diocese of Charlotte, N.C. "After consultation with my canonical advisors, I write to suggest that the easiest way for this to go forward would be simply to wait out the necessary five years and then proceed if you so decide that way," Law wrote to Bishop William G. Curlin on Aug. 23, 1999....The Rev. Francis Murphy, another Boston "lend-lease" priest, who was accused of molestation and child pornography in Alaska." http://www2.bostonherald.com/news/local_regional/chur02052003.htm

Former Law aide was concerned about Geoghan's future, not past By Kathleen Burge, 2/5/03 "After learning that the Rev. John J. Geoghan had admitted molesting seven boys from the same family, a deputy to Cardinal Bernard F. Law said he was bothered more by what Geoghan might do than what he had done.....Banks has said that he believed Geoghan's case had been handled correctly by another church official, Bishop Thomas V. Daily -- the same official to whom Geoghan allegedly confessed molesting the boys....Banks was questioned about his role in overseeing Geoghan, who is now serving a prison sentence for molesting a boy a decade ago. Banks, who heads the Green Bay, Wis. diocese, became the vicar for administration under Law in 1984. Daily is now the bishop of the Brooklyn, N.Y. diocese." http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/036/metro/Former_Law_aide_was_concerned_ab

Ex-Green Party official arrested at war protest
by Laurel J. Sweet
Wednesday, February 5, 2003
The former campaign manager of Green Party gubernatorial candidate Jill Stein was arrested with one other man early yesterday morning after a 12-hour war protest at U.S. Sen. John Kerry's Boston offices.  Patrick Keaney, 33, of Brighton and Matthew Osborn, 24, of Brookline, were charged with trespassing and later released on personal recognizance following their arraignments in Boston Municipal Court.  Keaney, who ran Stein's ill-fated campaign, said ``tempers were getting short'' by the time he, Osborn and a third protester who was not arrested began stretching out on the floor about 2:45 a.m. The men want Kerry to demand President Bush return to Congress for a second vote on whether to attack Iraq.

Nader says oil firm ties sway Bush war strategy
Consumer advocate Ralph Nader led a group of peace activists yesterday in accusing the Bush administration of letting its ties to the oil industry influence the government's war strategy against Iraq. Nader noted that Bush received nearly $2 million in contributions from the oil and gas industry during the 2000 election and that Vice President Dick Cheney headed Halliburton, an energy company, before taking office. Bush gambles $518bn on red
By Simon English in New York February 5 2003
President George Bush on Monday bet his reputation for economic competence on a massive increase in military spending and a return to a level of government debt not seen since his father led the US in the early 1990s. His proposed budget for 2004 includes a rise in Pentagon spending of $US15 billion ($26 billion) next year and $US20 billion in each of the following five years, taking military costs to $US484 billion by 2009.
The budget would see America spend 13.5 per cent of its wealth on the military - more than all the next 20 richest countries. A $US304 billion budget deficit is projected for this year, a record in dollar terms that tops the $US290 billion set in 1992. But the deficit amounts to only 3 per cent of the economy and is regarded by most experts as manageable for the next few years.

Let us also remember the unjust suffering of the Iraqi people. For the last 13 years since the blockade was imposed, you must be aware of the amount of harm that it has caused the Iraqi people, particularly the children and the elderly, as a result of the shortage of food and medicine and other aspects of their life. Therefore we are facing a critical situation. On that basis, it is not surprising that there might be complaints relating to the small details of the inspection which may be essential issues as far as we are concerned and the way we see the whole thing. It is possible that those Iraqis who are involved with the inspection might complain about the conduct of the inspectors and they complain indeed. It is also possible that some inspectors either for reasons of practical and detailed procedure, or for some other motives, may complain about the Iraqi conduct. 'No interest in war' Every fair-minded person knows that as far as resolution 1441 is concerned, the Iraqis have been fulfilling their obligations under the resolution. When Iraq objects to the conduct of those implementing the Security Council resolutions, that doesn't mean that Iraq wishes to push things to confrontation. Iraq has no interest in war.
