February 6 2003 Environmentally friendly nappies that can be safely burned or flushed down the toilet could soon become reality following the invention by a Japanese firm of a water-absorbing resin. The new resin, which is "made of guar gum and can be dissolved by micro- organisms" in water, can also be buried as fertiliser to help desert greening, according to Norihisa Sasaki, a spokesman for textiles firm Unitika Ltd. The company has used the resin and special textiles to make prototype nappies that completely break down into water and carbon dioxide, he said. Conventional disposable nappies pose an environmental nuisance as they contain sodium polyacrylate, which cannot be broken down, and are largely made of synthetic materials. Disposable nappies account for about 2.7 million tonnes of waste in American landfill sites alone every year, according to the website of Scientific American. Parents need not worry about the nappies dissolving while they are being worn, Mr Sasaki said, unless the wearer is in a place like a sauna and exposed to high temperatures and humidity. The cost of the nappies remains a problem. The trial version cost five times as much as ordinary nappies.
