WASHINGTON IN BRIEF

Thursday, February 13, 2003; Page A07

9/11 Commission to Hold Public Hearing in N.Y.

The bipartisan commission investigating the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks will hold its first public hearing in New York. It will include testimony from victims' families and others directly affected by the assault, officials said yesterday.

The group's chairman, former New Jersey governor Thomas H. Kean (R), told reporters the commission will aggressively pursue all leads in its investigation of events before and after the attacks, which left more than 3,000 dead in New York, at the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania.

The investigation could include testimony from Cabinet members, according to Kean and his vice chairman, former representative Lee H. Hamilton (D-Ind.).

"We have a very solemn burden here, and that is to tell a story: What happened, how it happened and, perhaps most importantly, how to make sure it doesn't happen again," Kean said after the commission's second closed-door hearing.
