I'm not trying to justify this behavior, which is clearly beyond the pale of
any sort of civilized conduct. But has it occurred to anyone that when the ANC
took power in South Africa, its supporters had the not unreasonable
expectation that they would share in the wealth so egregiously displayed by
the country's ruling class? I know that a lot of the crime is directly
attributable to the culture of lawlessness and rebellion bred into an entire
generation of black South Africans. All I am suggesting is that if the
universally lionized Nelson Mandela had used his very considerable personal
charisma to validate a true redistribution of economic resources, instead of
focussing on electoral politics and his own lovelife, much of the crime and
violence could have been avoided. Crime is, no matter where it takes place, in
the final analysis a political act, and political courage is required to deal
with it.
