Division of Psychosocial Factors and Health, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden. "Ten children's descriptions of 102 incidents of sexual abuse and the process of disclosing these incidents during police interviews were studied. Children's self-reports of the abuse were compared to videotapes of the incidents made by the lone perpetrator. RESULTS: There was a significant tendency among the children to deny or belittle their experiences. Some children simply did not want to disclose their experiences, some had difficulties remembering them, and one child lacked adequate concepts to understand and describe them."

Sabine Dardenne, 19, was abducted in 1996 and held captive by Dutroux for 80 days before investigators found her and another girl cowering in a cellar behind a false wall. Dutroux was sentenced to 13 years in prison for child rape in 1989, but was released after three years for good behaviour. He has been held since 1996 on charges of kidnapping and raping six children and young women, including Ms Dardenne, in the mid-1990s; and of murdering four of them. He has yet to stand trial on these charges. Dutroux admits some of the charges and denies others, but claims that he procured the girls and young women, aged from eight to 19, for the sexual gratification of others and not just himself. However, in an interview given to several Belgian periodicals, Ms Dardenne appeared to pour cold water on the idea that her tormentor was part of a sinister paedophile network. This "strictly confidential" UN document, dated 10 December 2002, examines "Likely Humanitarian Scenarios" in the event of a war in Iraq.....
In planning for the numbers that will require medical treatment, "as many as 500,000 could require treatment to a greater or lesser degree as a result of direct or indirect injuries" (para.23). A footnote bases this claim on World Health Organisation estimates of 100,000 direct casualties, and 400,000 indirect casualties. The high number of indirect casualties may be partially because "the outbreak of diseases in epidemic if not pandemic proportions is very likely." (para.25). "It is estimated that the nutritional status of some 3.03 million persons countrywide will be dire and they will require therapeutic feeding. This consists of 2.03 million severely and moderately malnourished children under five and one million pregnant and lactating women." (para.27). A footnote identifies this as a United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) estimate. "It is estimated that there will eventually be some 900,000 Iraqi refugees requiring assistance, of which 100,000 will be in need of immediate assistance."
