TOM TANCREDO: CHALLENGE BUSH IN THE REPUBLICAN PRIMARIES

By Joe Sansone
March 4, 2003

Though many Americans may not have heard of the name, congressman Tom Tancredo is quickly becoming a hero to many Americans that are baffled by the Bush administration's refusal to enforce current immigration laws and address the issue of out of control legal immigration in its war on terrorism.

Tancredo is the chairman of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus and has been an outspoken critic of the administration's "no borders policy." By introducing Secure ID legislation he has also fought against a "back door amnesty" called the Matricula Consular card that is issued by the Mexican government to illegal aliens and felons as a form of ID. Many local governments and even many banks accept the card as a legitimate form of ID.

More recently, Tancredo has introduced the Mass Immigration Reduction Act of 2003 (H.R. 946). "Specifically, the bill establishes a `timeout' that will allow the federal government to control both mass immigration and border security." The devastating toll of mass immigration has strained the infrastructure of healthcare, education, law enforcement, auto insurance, the environment, American culture, and the list goes on...

Terrorism, which is directly caused by both legal and illegal immigration, best exemplified by the terrorists of 9-11, some of which were illegal aliens, some legal immigrants, has made immigration the most important issue in America. Yet astonishingly the Bush administration has ignored the issue entirely. In fact their answer seems to be to issue worker passes to illegal aliens. Wrong answer!

With what may become the worst economy since the great depression, rising oil prices, a looming war with Iraq, dropping consumer confidence, the prospect of increased interest rates, a real estate bubble that may burst, and a tight job market, the possibility exists that it could all hit the fan. If it does, Bush’s economic policy of exporting jobs and importing workers must be challenged. For some reason those displaced IT workers aren’t buying the argument that immigrants take jobs that Americans don’t want.

These factors seem to already have an effect on the political landscape as a new CNN/USA TODAY/Gallup poll indicates that Bush’s re-election support has fallen below 50% for the first time. The costs and the necessity of a war with Iraq may also influence public opinion about Bush negatively. Claiming that an attack on Iraq is solely for national security purposes loses credibility while maintaining a "no borders" policy domestically.

Even if the war with Iraq goes smoothly the occupation afterward may get ugly in its own rights. U.S. troops might be targets of on going terrorism and the multi-billion dollar post war rebuilding period may not seem worth it to Americans struggling to make ends meet.

What should a Tancredo platform consist of?

Obviously stopping immigration for security as well as economic reasons should be the centerpiece of his campaign, as well as traditional conservative issues, including less government and fewer taxes.

So too should support for fair trade policies and opposition to phony "free trade treaties" be central to a Tancredo campaign. Up until now, the congressman has leaned towards supporting so-called free trade policies, but he has shown a willingness to buck globalists at times as he did with his opposition to PNTR for China.

The U.S. trade deficit in goods and services was $435 billion in 2002, a 21 percent jump from $358 billion in 2001. Such trade policies are as devastating to the United States as out of control immigration is. The issues of trade and immigration are intertwined and are vital to the economic and political independence of the United States in the 21st century.

By reaching out to center right populists with issues like stopping immigration and promoting fair trade, Tancredo could tap into an America First political current that was mainstreamed by the tragic events of 9-11. Should he add fair trade policies to his political arsenal, a Tancredo candidacy could pack a one two punch that has the potential to stun Bush with a standing eight count.

But an opportunity also exists to draw support from libertarian sentiments by defending civil liberties and resisting the police state mentality. Simply put, the case could be made to deport non-citizens and police the borders rather than create a police state that will continue to grow and harass citizens.

While Bush may have a tough time in the general election, Democrats will not likely challenge him on these issues. After all, Bush’s "no borders" and globalist trade policies are a continuation of the Clinton agenda.

In the current political climate, a Tancredo challenge to Bush in the primaries has the potential to do as well if not better than Buchanan did in 92. If he does do that well in the primaries, and Bush loses the general election in 2004, the congressman will be in a position on capital hill to virtually campaign non-stop until the 2008 campaign and emerge as the front-runner.
