Saddam boasts of victory SAMIA NAKHOUL IN BAGHDAD SADDAM Hussein yesterday branded President George Bush "the despot of the century" and said Iraq would defeat US invaders. "You, the Iraqi people, will be victorious, armed with faith, and the despots will be defeated and arrogance will not benefit them," he said in a message to mark the Islamic New Year, read on Iraqi television. His statement was laced with Koranic verses and religious sayings. While Iraq yesterday destroyed more al-Samoud 2 missiles, he described conflict with the US as a battle of good versus evil. "What does the despot of this century want? What is the right path to defeat him?" Saddam asked. "The despot imagines that he is like God, capable of controlling the universe and doing whatever he wishes, but the devil has pushed him into the abyss of blasphemy. Saddam said the Iraqi people had always resisted danger and tyranny through faith. "You will be victorious through your faith and by choosing right against evil and the jihad [holy struggle] against the mercenaries and the aggressors," he said. An Iraqi information ministry official, Uday al-Tae’i, told reporters: "Work has started this morning to destroy two to three more missiles." He said the work was happening at the Taji military air base, 25 miles north of Baghdad. A missile casting chamber was also being scrapped, he said. Hiro Ueki, a spokesman for UN inspectors in Baghdad, gave no details about the number of missiles being scrapped. Baghdad began on Saturday to destroy some 120 missiles, meeting a key UN deadline. Sixteen of the missiles, whose range exceeds the 150-km (93-mile) limit set by UN resolutions, were scrapped over the weekend. Other UN teams searched missile and chemical sites in and around Baghdad yesterday. One team headed to the customs office in the northern city of Mosul. Iraq has also offered new concessions relating to chemical and biological weapons. Baghdad said it would submit a new report on VX and anthrax stocks.
