It may be that some needles are better manufactured than others and
she was keeping the good ones for patients who had finer veins. My
mother was at one time a specialist at starting IVs. Some people have
very large veins and are easy to start IVs on. Others have finer veins
and it can be a big problem. How would you like to be stuck several
times? She probably thought she was doing them a favor. Incidentally, it
used to be that all needles were re-used. My mother had a set that she
used for giving anti-biotics to us kids for years. They got rather dull.
We were happy when she got the throw away type. However, she would
always sterilize them in boiling water. Much better than H2O2.
