(1973) [27]. Presence of both visna genetic sequences and RSV-related mouse erythroleukemia retrovirus genetic sequences in HIV-1, given historic investigations, appears to be indicative that the origin of the AIDS virus may be something other than a "chance mutation" in some remote nowhere. Peluso et al. (1985) reported a "trojan horse mechanism" for the spread of visna virus in mononuclear phagocytes (monocytes) [28]. Significantly, Anderson and Yunis (1983) described the use of "trojan horse" leukocytes by the human AIDS retrovirus to infect cells [29]. There can be little doubt that HIV-1, the AIDS retrovirus, is substantially related to visna virus.
