Satellite Photos Of Shuttle Sought From Spy Agency

A senior NASA official in Washington asked a US spy agency for satellite
images of the space shuttle Columbia's damaged skin during the final
days of its flight, The Washington Post has reported. The newspaper,
quoting sources, said William Readdy, NASA's top official for space
flight, made the informal request to the National Imagery and Mapping
Agency (NIMA) days after a shuttle official at Johnson Space Center in
Houston decided not to request such an image through normal channels
with the Defense Department agency.

The previously undisclosed request is the first indication that anyone
at NASA's Washington headquarters had any uncertainty about the
shuttle's safety during its flight, the newspaper reported. Quoting
sources, the newspaper reported that NIMA did not act on Readdy's
request because it was not considered "formal" and its officials were
preoccupied with preparations for a possible war in Iraq. The newspaper
reported that Readdy had spurned two previous offers by NIMA during
Columbia's flight to produce an image that would clarify whether the
shuttle had damage that might put its crew at risk during its landing.
NASA previously said no one at its headquarters had any safety concerns
during the flight, the newspaper reported. An agency official, speaking
on condition of anonymity, confirmed on Thursday that Readdy had
discussed the issue with the spy satellite agency, not once but three
times, the newspaper said.

The Columbia Accident Investigation Board is charged with finding out
why NASA's oldest shuttle disintegrated over Texas on Feb. 1. All seven
astronauts aboard were killed, just 16 minutes before they were to land
at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. One theory is that debris from the
shuttle's external fuel tank knocked off some of the spacecraft's
heat-shielding tiles about 80 seconds after launch, allowing superheated
gas to get in during re-entry.
