What Kept Elizabeth Smart From Escaping? Subconscious Adapts to Horror in Order to Endure It By Jeanie Lerche Davis WebMD Medical News Reviewed By Michael Smith, MD 3/14/03 -- After nine months, Elizabeth Smart is back home. And this is raising questions about how her captor kept a 15-year-old from escaping when she may have had opportunity. Was she brainwashed? At this point, details of her ordeal remain a mystery. But psychologists voice a few opinions about Elizabeth Smart's state of mind during her disappearance. Some liken it to the so-called "Stockholm syndrome," http://my.webmd.com/content/Article/62/71574.htm

Kidnapped girl's ordeal over after nine months Man claiming to be a prophet held after family accuse police of bungling  Duncan Campbell in Los Angeles 3/14/03 "...Elizabeth Smart, the kidnapped Utah teenager....nine months after she was abducted from her bedroom in Salt Lake City, she would reappear safe and well. Now it appears that her kidnapper, Brian David Mitchell, a handyman who had worked at the Smart home, believed himself to be a prophet in direct consultation with God. Mitchell, a Mormon, had supposedly decided that Elizabeth, who is now 15, was to be his second bride." http://www.guardian.co.uk/international/story/0,3604,913938,00.html

Hallucinations linked to abuse in childhood  03/14/03 By Martin Johnston health reporter Psychiatric patients who were abused as children are more likely to suffer hallucinations than those who were not abused, research has found. They are also far more susceptible to suffering "command hallucinations" - 17 per cent compared with 2 per cent of the non-abused. In these hallucinations, the person hears a voice ordering him or her to commit self-harm or hurt someone else. "These are the most debilitating hallucinations," one of the researchers, Dr John Read, said yesterday. Dr Read is a senior psychology lecturer at Auckland University. The study was published yesterday in a journal published by the British Psychological Society. It follows groundbreaking study led by Dr Read and published last year which linked sexual abuse in childhood to schizophrenia.... Some of the worst symptoms of schizophrenia are more common in psychiatric patients abused as children than in those who were not abused. *Records for 200 community mental health clients showed 92 had been sexually or physically abused. Of the 60 abused as children, many went on to be abused in adulthood. * Fifty-three per cent abused as children suffered auditory hallucinations, compared with 18 per cent of those not abused. The figure rose to 71 per cent for those sexually abused both in childhood and as adults.  * Thirteen per cent of those sexually abused as children had hallucinations of touch, such as insects crawling on them or objects entering them, compared with none of the non-abused." http://www.nzherald.co.nz/storydisplay.cfm?thesection=news&thesubsection=&storyID=3200679&reportID=16

Religious Terrorism and Trauma: Third annual conference on Treating DID and MPD October 9,10,11 2003 Twin Rivers Worship Center St. Louis Missouri - The third annual conference on Treating MPD/DID will be held again this year in St. Louis, Mo. This year's timely theme will be ‘Religious Terrorism'. The focus will be on domestic terrorist acts of abuse and violence from destructive cults and deviant religious groups. The philosophy of ‘terrorism' is not limited to international campaigns, but is also perpetrated by acts of intimidation by destructive cult and occult groups. These acts are many times criminal, abusive and traumatic. Healing the survivor of these acts takes a multi-faceted approach.
