Epstein's website presents arguments (reputed evidence) linking the 9/11 principals to Iraqi Intelligence -- heavy on the Czech link between Atta and an Iraqi handler

If, for the sake of argument, we assume that link to be true, the quotes below raise an intriguing question: Why would the major US media (presumably with CIA input) work so hard to cover up the only supposedly solid 9-11/Saddam connection -- something the White House desperately needed to justify its war against Iraq?
Did the CIA itself have something even more important to HIDE in that meeting? Could al-Ani, for example, have actually been a double agent for some group other than "Iraqi intelligence" which needed to be protected from closer public scrutiny?
[Richard Holbrooke claimed Atta had been on the CIA's watch list prior to 9-11. According to Epstein, that was not true. So, why would Holbrooke lie about that?]
On April 28, 2002, in a story in Newsweek entitled 'Phantom Link To Iraq,' Michael Isikoff reported that the meeting that had been widely reported in the press between the September 11th hijacker Mohamed Atta and the Iraqi consul Ahmed Khalil Ibrahim Samir al-Ani, in April 2001 never actually took place.
Supposedly, this meeting had taken place in Prague in early April 2001, just before al-Ani had been expelled from the Czech Republic for activities inconsistent with being a diplomat, and had been observed by the counterintelligence service of the Czech Republic, which had Al-ani under surveillance for other reasons.
The only witness to the putative liaison was Czech counterintelligence, and, according to Isikoff, the Czechs 'were no longer standing behind the story, noting "NEWSWEEK has learned that a few months ago, the Czechs quietly acknowledged that they may have been mistaken about the whole thing.'"
The fog descended in a matter of days, with dozens of newspapers, including the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and New York Times reporting, along the lines of the Newsweek story, that the 'Czechs' had retracted their report about this meeting. ...
The [only] phantoms, it turned out, were the nameless 'Czechs' in the Newsweek story, who Isikoff claimed 'quietly acknowledged that they may have been mistaken about the whole thing.'
Whoever these phantom sources were, they were not "Czechs" in the counter intelligence service, the Ministry that oversees it, or the Czech government cited by its UN Ambassador. The Czech intelligence head, Jiri Ruzek, the Czech Minister of the Interior, Stanislav Gross, and the Czech ambassador, speaking for the government, Hynek Kmonicek, all openly affirm [to this day] that the meeting between a September 11th hijacker and an official of the Iraq government indeed took place about 5 months before the World Trade Center was destroyed.

On October 21, 2002, the New York Times reported on its front page such a stunning scoop. It declared that President George Bush had received a phone call earlier in the year from the Czech president, Vaclav Havel, revealing that his government had no evidence of the putative meeting in Prague between the hijacker Atta and the Iraqi diplomat al-Ani.
The story by James Risen reported, "Havel has quietly told the White House he has concluded that there is no evidence to confirm earlier reports that Mohamed Atta, the leader in the Sept. 11 attacks, met with an Iraqi intelligence officer in Prague just months before the attacks on New York and Washington."
Even though the only sources given for this scoop were anonymous "Czech officials," the story was uncritically carried as front page news by almost every major newspaper in America.
The story, however, was untrue.
After the story broke, President Havel stated through his spokesman that he had never spoken to President Bush or the "White House" about this meeting. The spokesman, Ladislav Spacek, stated unequivocally that the Times claim that Havel had called Bush, or any high-ranking officials of his Administration, was false.
"It is a fabrication," Spacek said, "Nothing like this has occurred."
Even so, on October 23rd, the Times again used the fabricated phone conversation between Havel and the White House. This time as the basis of an editorial, entitled "The Illusory Prague Connection," that argued that all the evidence from Prague linking Iraq to terrorism was wholly illusionary.
