It's called what Rumsy referred to as the "Old Europe" syndrome, in that
"Old Europe" has alredy gone through its Fascist stages and can see the
parallels between the 1930ies and the US.  The danger comes about when
the U.S. supposedly defeated Fascism, it made us immune from its effects.
Don't woik that way.  Not for us, not for the Neo-Palestineans, not for no
one.  It comes from a too-ingrained sense of a person and his group being
"right" and expecting everyone else to recognise that.

And so, something from, about "Old Europe":

What was representative of European fascism about all four writers was
their revolt against decadence and their defense of spirituality.  What
exactly did they mean by these words, and, given the fact that there were
inevitably variations in the way each of themn used these words, what
were some of the connotations they all accepted?  With the exception of
the early Celine (more about this later [in the text, A<>E<>R]), these
writers repeatedly extolled, as a major dimension of the spiritual, a set of
essentially military [it. In text, A<:>E<:>R] values.  Combined with these was
a distinct taste for socio-economic conservatism, right-wing nationalism,
Darwinian ?realism,? and misogyny.

In the lexicon of these writers, spiritual [it.] referred not only to the
religious and the transcendental, which automatically excluded Marxist
atheism and historical materialism, but to authoritarian conservatism and
male virility.  The spiritual included survival of the fittest, careers open to
talent, the right of natural elites to upward social mobility and political
leadership, as well as accommodation with large sections of the
established elites.  It prized social hierarchy, respect for superiors, and
military discipline.  It was best served by capitalist economics, class
collaboration, and social order.  The spiritual also meant physical prowess,
self-discipline, and military bravery.  It required a certain asceticism
toward one?s body and one?s feelings, which emotionally translated into a
tough-minded realism with little pity for its victims.  The spiritual was fed
by an energizing nationalistic passion and an energizing religious faith, both
of which justified brutalizing decadent outsiders.  The spiritual was
forceful toward the weak.  The spiritual was male.

Decadence was the opposite of these values.  It connoted not only
Marxism and liberalism but also secularism and feminism.  Decadence was
proletarian solidarity, class struggle, and Marxism internationalism.  It was
political, social, and gender democracy.  It was rule by the Darwinian unfit.
Decadence was the nationalization of the basic means of production and
working-class selfishness, laziness, and indiscipline.  It was hedonism,
cowardice, and self-indulgence as well as physical and moral softness.  It
was debilitating rationalism, religious skepticism, and liberal sentimentalism.
It was military defeat by one?s enemies.  Decadence was female.
