APPARENT CONFLICTS OF INTEREST WHILE IGNORING ROLES OF CLINTON, MCAULIFFE
AND COHEN IN GLOBAL CROSSING SCANDAL

(Washington, DC) Judicial Watch, the
public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government
corruption and abuse, said today that it was disappointed by the
hypocritical and politically opportunistic requests of Congressman John
Conyers of Michigan for a Defense Department investigation of possible
conflicts of interest by Defense Advisory Board Chairman Richard Perle in
his actions as an advisor to the telecommunications firm Global Crossing.
Congressman Conyers has remained mute concerning Democratic National
Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe’s allegedly conspiring with Global
Crossing directors and officers to inflate and artificially enhance Global
Crossing’s income and market price of its stock, while allegedly arranging
and participating in a political payoff scheme to former President Bill
Clinton in exchange for political favors and favorable official actions.
Congressman Conyers seems also to have ignored former Clinton
administration Defense Secretary, and Global Crossing board member,
William S. Cohen’s alleged conspiracy to “pump and dump” Global Crossing
stock, and alleged corrupt awarding of government
contracts.
Judicial Watch filed suit on behalf of shareholders of
Global Crossing against directors and officers of the corporation, and
others, on May 7, 2002. Global Crossing is up for sale to Hutchison
Whampoa, a powerful conglomerate controlled by Hong Kong billionaire and
Chinese government agent Li Ka-Shing. In 1999, Hutchison Whampoa – against
U.S. security interests – took control of the ports on both ends of the
Panama Canal.
Judicial Watch is filing formal ethics complaints and
requests for investigation with the Office of Government Ethics and the
Inspectors General of several government departments concerning Mr.
Perle’s apparent conflicts of interest in the Global Crossing matter, as
well as his activities on behalf of software company, Autonomy, and a
venture capital firm, Trireme Partners. Judicial Watch encourages
Congressman Conyers to seek a full investigation of his Democratic
colleagues and their ethically questionable practices as
well.
“What’s good for the goose is good for the gander. Turning a
blind eye to ethical questions within one’s own party only furthers the
dishonesty and corruption that’s rampant in Washington, DC. Judicial Watch
seeks the whole, unvarnished truth in these matters,” stated Judicial
Watch Chairman and General Counsel Larry Klayman.
