Pentagon Shuns Name 'Fedayeen' for Iraqi Irregulars Thursday, March 27, 2003; Page A27 What's in a name? If it is fedayeen, enough to get the Pentagon to shun it. The Arabic term can be translated literally as "those who sacrifice themselves for a cause." For U.S. military officials, that is akin to bestowing the status of freedom fighters on Iraqi irregulars who have been mounting sustained guerrilla- style attacks on U.S. forces in southern Iraq. A directive distributed to Army units in Iraq this week banned use of the word. Instead, the Army is supposed to refer to them as paramilitary forces, or PMF. But even that is regarded by some at the Pentagon as too elevated a term. "It sounds too positive in some way," Torie Clarke, the Defense Department's top spokeswoman, said at a news conference yesterday. Citing instances in the past week in which U.S. military officials said the Iraqi fighters pretended to be civilians, faked surrender and used a hospital for cover, she accused them of operating "outside all the laws and norms" of war and reflecting "the brutality of the regime." Clarke said she prefers to call them "thugs." -- Bradley Graham © 2003 The Washington Post Company thug http://www.bartleby.com/61/32/T0193200.html PRONUNCIATION: thg NOUN: 1.
