2 Suspects in Murder of Serbian Premier Are Killed by Police March 28, 2003 By REUTERS BELGRADE, Serbia, March 27 (Reuters) - The Serbian police today shot dead two prime suspects in the assassination this month of Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic, the Interior Ministry said in a statement read on local television. It said the two men, Dusan Spasojevic and Mile Lukovic, who were suspected of being organized crime figures, were killed near Belgrade while resisting arrest. "In tonight's arrest action, the leaders of this gang were giving armed resistance and the police had to use force," the statement said. The government has identified the men as leaders of a powerful criminal group known as the Zemun gang which it says organized and carried out the assassination of Mr. Djindjic on March 12 in an effort to spread chaos and avoid arrest. It said earlier this week that the suspected assassin, Zvezdan Jovanovic, a deputy commander of a special police unit set up under Slobodan Milosevic, had been arrested. The Interior Ministry statement did not mention the third suspected leader of the Zemun gang, a former special police commander, Milorad Lukovic. The authorities say the Zemun gang is a powerful drug cartel linked to Milosevic-era state security officials and led by Milorad Lukovic and the two men killed today. Mr. Djindjic, who played a crucial role in ousting of Mr. Milosevic in 2000 and enraged nationalists by sending him to The Hague to stand trial, was shot dead by a sniper outside the main government building just over two weeks ago. He fought to transform the impoverished republic from an international pariah to a Western-style democracy, and vowed to clamp down on organized crime that flourished under Mr. Milosevic's. http://www.nytimes.com/2003/03/28/international/europe/28SERB.html?ex=1049841140&ei=1&en=5a302dd4f1ff941f HOW TO ADVERTISE --------------------------------- For information on advertising in e-mail newsletters or other creative advertising opportunities with The New York Times on the Web, please contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] or visit our online media kit at http://www.nytimes.com/adinfo For general information about NYTimes.com, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Copyright 2003 The New York Times Company www.ctrl.org DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
