A Terrorist, the CIA, ‘Blue Death’ & the Inslaw Case
American Free Press has obtained a five-page re port confirming that a meeting took place in California in 1986 to arrange U.S. weapons assistance for Afghan rebels fighting Soviet invasion troops.
Among those attending, according to J. Orlin Grabbe, an independent newsman, is currently the most wanted fugitive in the world, Osama bin Laden, the supposed mastermind behind the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
In the Jan.7-14 edition, AFP reported in an interview with former FBI executive and AFP correspondent Ted L. Gunderson, who retired in the late 1970s while serving in a post equivalent to deputy director, Gunderson had arranged the meeting at the request of a top official in the administration of then-President Ronald Reagan. Gunderson said the Reagan official had asked if he could assist in helping the Afghans obtain weapons to combat attack helicopters and other Soviet aircraft.
The meeting, Gunderson confirmed, took place at the Hilton Hotel on Ventura Blvd. Sherman Oaks, Calif., with four men present.
They included Gunderson, who was accompanied by scientist Michael Riconosciuto, then a long-time weapons and explosives expert linked to the CIA. Two representatives of the Afghan rebels were also present: Ralph Olberg, described as a “prominent American businessman” who worked at the Afghan desk at the State Department, and a man using the CIA-provided cover name of Tim Osman, who, according to Grabbe, was bin Laden without his beard.
AFP has obtained a hand-written report of the meeting, which was provided on condition that its author not be revealed at the request of Riconosciuto, as confirmation that Riconosciuto had been working for the Afghan rebels with the U.S. government.
At the time, Riconosciuto was in the middle of a serious falling out with his CIA bosses over the part he had played in what has become known as the Inslaw case, the alleged theft from its producers of PROMIS computer software by high officials linked to the Reagan administration. The PROMIS software was designed to allow “back door” entry into the computer systems of foreign intelligence agencies.
The software found its way into the hands of the Israeli Mossad and has been used to tap into intelligence agencies around the world.
Riconosciuto angered the wrong people by involving himself in the Inslaw case on behalf of the software producers and found himself arrested on phony drug charges.
Today, he is incommunicado at a federal prison at Springfield, Mo, where he is suffering from advanced cancer.
AFP was told that he wanted the report of the meeting “as insurance” in his effort to elude those trying to frame him on the drug charges.
According to the report, the fact that the meeting was directly linked to the Reagan administration through businessman Ralph Olberg had been “confirmed by journalist Dan Casolaro” who was recently “suicided.”
Casolaro, who was investigating the Inslaw case and, apparently, Reagan administration links to the Afghan rebels and bin Laden, was found dead in a motel room. The official cause of death was suicide.
Gunderson told AFP that although the meeting in Sherman Oaks was in fact held, exactly as described by journalist Grabbe, he could not confirm that the mysterious Tim Osman was bin Laden.
Gunderson has, however, confirmed the authenticity of the five-page report, which is dated Sept. 29, 1991, and was written and signed, with a witness also signing and being present at the time in Los Angeles.
The document provides details of how a deal was set up between Riconosciuto and the Afghan rebels by Olberg and Osman, in which they would be provided U.S. Stinger II missiles and converted Red Chinese 107 millimeter rockets.
Riconosciuto, who was to get the Red Chinese hardware through his connections with the China-owned armaments group known as Norinco, had the task of modifying the Stinger shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles so they could not be utilized by the Soviets if they were captured.
The Afghans also purportedly agreed to serve as a means of testing American-provided weaponry against Soviet weapons systems, to photograph the results and report back to the CIA.
It was also proposed at the meeting that Riconosciuto would analyze a Soviet weapons system that had fallen into the hands of Afghan rebels, known as “blue death.” “Witnesses stated the corpses [exposed to this weapon] did not decay even after being exposed and un buried for six months.”
Gunderson said he arranged the meeting because at the time the Soviets were America’s enemy and that he did not take an active part in the discussion “since it was mostly technical stuff they talked about.”
He said the reference to “blue death” may have been about a Soviet neutron bomb “or some such similar device.”
The report discussed “the capture and/or defection of high ranking Soviet military personnel who had sensitive and compartmentalized information and the availability of their briefings . . . [and] one person who was a Soviet defector and was a communications officer who had detailed information of the highest level of Soviet military C3I [command control, intelligence and communications].”
Tim Osman, identified by Grabbe as bin Laden, was dressed in sports clothes and, like Gunderson, did not say much, leaving most of the discussion to Riconosciuto and Olberg.
The mysterious Olberg reportedly at one time was associated with the late vice president and senator Hubert Humphrey (D-Minn.).
