-Caveat Lector-
Bush defenders and the news media are focusing on
Bush's "16 words" as if this were the important story.
It isn't.
America didn't go to war because of just 16 words.
Our country started a war based upon the many
statements made by President Bush and members
of his Administration over the period of at least
a year. Bush and Cheney told us repeatedly that Saddam
had all sorts of "weapons of mass destruction" and
the production facilities to make more of them.
They told us about large quantities of chemical and
biological weapons.
They told us about rockets, artillery shells, and
remote controlled aircraft to deliver these
horrific weapons.
They told us Saddam was attempting to obtain or build
nuclear weapons.
Bush himself raised the spectre of "mushroom clouds
over American cities."
To reduce all of this to just "16 words" is simply
dishonest.
The important fundamental questions are these:
Did President Bush tell the American People the truth
when he said war was necessary because our country was
in imminent danger from Saddam Hussein?
Did the President believe this was the truth?
Or, did he want war with Iraq and then tell us only
certain information intended to justify the war and
mislead us into believing it was necessary?
The American People who are paying for this war with
blood and money deserve truthful answers to these
questions.
The so-called "16 words" are just the smallest tip of
a huge iceberg.
And this iceberg could sink Bush's presidency.
