By Mike Anton 7/16/03 "The archives of the Human Betterment Foundation, a private, Pasadena-based think tank that promoted sterilization from 1926 to 1942, have been at Caltech for six decades. They were kept in a warehouse until 1968. Only since 1995 has most of the collection been open to researchers." "1942, the foundation was known worldwide. Hundreds of thousands of its studies, pamphlets and books were distributed to policymakers, schools and libraries. Its work informed a wide audience, from government officials developing their own sterilization programs to high school students writing term papers. "You were so kind to send new information about the sterilization particulars in California," Dr. Fritz Lenz, one of Nazi Germany's leading eugenicists, wrote Gosney in 1937. "These practical experiences are also very valuable for us in Germany. For this I thank you." In a 1934 article for the Journal of Heredity, Popenoe dismissed suspicions that the Nazis were motivated by dreams of racial purity. He lauded Hitler as a visionary, quoted from "Mein Kampf" and concluded that Germany's effort was in "accord with the best thought of eugenicists in all civilized countries." The Germans returned the compliment. When Sacramento banker and Human Betterment Foundation board member Charles M. Dick Cheney, the US Vice-President and the administration's most outspoken hawk over Iraq, faced demands for his resignation last night as he was accused of using false evidence to build the case for war. He was accused of using his office to insist that a false claim about Iraq's efforts to buy uranium from Africa to restart its nuclear program be included in George Bush's State of the Union address - overriding the concerns of the CIA director, George Tenet. Mr Cheney was also accused of knowingly misleading Congress when the administration sought its authorization for the use of force to oust Saddam Hussein.

Ashcroft Could Face Reckoning on Detainee Mistreatment - Expos� Energizes Court Battle by Chisun Lee July 16 - 22, 2003 A month after its release, a meticulous expos� of the Justice Department's troubling treatment of immigrants detained after the September 11 attacks has spurred a burst of legal activity that could lead to a reckoning for U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft in a Brooklyn courthouse. So far unnoticed by the press and the public, a group of detainees has seized on the 198-page report by the Justice Department's inspector general as new fodder for a class action suit that had previously starved for information from government agencies. In late June, lawyers for the detainees filed in federal court an expanded version of their civil complaint against Bush administration officials.....Seven former detainees accuse Ashcroft, FBI director Robert Mueller, former Immigration and Naturalization Service commissioner James Ziglar, and prison wardens and guards of ethnic profiling, violating their due process rights, and physical and verbal abuse, among other grievances. CCR wants Brooklyn U.S. District Court judge John Gleeson to hear the lawsuit as a class action encompassing possibly dozens, even hundreds, of other detainees.
