This is what made America great, its unity of diverse people. Sadly, that ethic has been replaced by bilingual education, multilingual voting ballots, government mandated interpreters and driver's license exams in multiple languages. This hurts all Americans but it hurts immigrants most of all. It is divisive by not permitting us to unite under a common language as United States citizens. It breeds distrust and makes us weak. This great nation was founded upon the idea that from many we would become one, not that from many we would remain many and somehow live in peace. A mere glance at any piece of American currency will reveal the Latin phrase "E Pluribus Unum." This true American ideal, "from many one," was translated best by John Quincy Adams, who said, "They must cast off the European skin, never to resume it. They must look forward to their posterity rather than backward to their ancestors." Horace Mann argued that "a foreign people . . . cannot be transformed into the full stature of American citizens merely by a voyage across the Atlantic." One of the strongest motives for building public schools was, therefore, the need to make Americans out of immigrants. At that time immigration was primarily European, today many different people come to our shores, but the reasons are still the same; one country, united. Washington said, "The bosom of America is open. . . to the oppressed and persecuted of all Nations and Religions." But, he warned, immigrants who nestled as groups in the national bosom, might retain the "Language, habits and principles (good or bad) which they bring with them." Therefore, he urged them to settle as individuals, prepared for "intermixture with our people." Then they would be "assimilated to our customs, measures and laws: in a word, soon become one people." Please do not allow our country to continue to be divided by being turned into a Tower of Babel at considerable tax payer expense. Please support this legislation. Respectfully, Anthony F.
