Israeli Jets Buzz Assad's Summer Residence
Israeli fighter jets buzzed President Assad's summer residence in northern Syria in what was intended as a message that Hizbullah's attacks on Israel's northern frontier from south Lebanon must be curbed, state-run Israeli television reported early Saturday.
"President Assad was inside that residence in Syria's northern port city of Latakia when the Israeli warplanes flew above it at almost rooftop level last Sunday," the TV report said.
The incursion, it said, came hard on the heels of the death of a Jewish settler by shrapnel of Hizbullah anti-aircraft in the northern Israeli town of Shlomi. He was the first Israeli shrapnel fatality since Hizbullah began shooting at intruding Israeli jets over Lebanon last year.
The broadcast indicated that Israel's F-16 fighter-bomber staged the foray into Syrian airspace via Lebanon, minutes after breaking the sound barrier over Beirut. It was the first Israeli violation of Syrian airspace since the 1982 invasion of Lebanon.
There was no immediate comment from Syria.
Israeli jets criss-crossed Syrian and Lebanese skies in the early days of that invasion to take out a chain of long-range anti-aircraft surface-to-air missiles Syria had then deployed in east Lebanon's Bekaa Valley along its western flank.
Syrian and Israeli planes penetrated each other's skies in abundance during the 1967 and 1973 Middle East wars. But the most sensational air incident between the two countries dates back to the mid-1960s, when a Syrian Mig-21 crashed the sound barrier over Israel's main oil refinery near Haifa.
Less than half an hour later, a squadron of Israeli air force fighters thundered in a supersonic run at rooftop level over Damascus. The sonic boom they produced in unison disrupted telephones and telecommunications for about half an hour and left no window with glass throughout the Syrian capital.
