USA WILL BLAME IRANIANS FOR BLITZ
Aug 21 2003

IT has become the familiar horror movie of the Middle East.

An embassy, an office block, filled with unsuspecting workers and then out of nowhere a truck packed with explosives driven by a suicidal manic.

The aim is always the same: to kill as many of these hated foreigners as possible.

You could call it the War of the Suicidal Trucker. On Monday it was the turn of the UN in Baghdad.

The attack is a devastating indictment of how rapidly the military situation has unravelled in post-Saddam Iraq.

The US game plan was to hit Saddam hard and hand over the policing of Iraq to the international community.

Now US troops will need to be in Iraq long after Bush has finished his second term.

Shock and awe has become an endless quagmire, another Vietnam.

No one really knows who carried out the devastating UN assault. Osama bin Laden?

Pro Saddam loyalists? Or, more dangerously still, an Iraqi Shia inspired by the Islamic regime in Iran.

Sixty per cent of Iraqis are Shia who appear increasingly impatient with the brutality and bungling incompetence of their American occupiers.

But for America's warmongers, like Vice President Dick Cheney, the finger of suspicion will inevitably point towards Iran - part of the "axis of evil".

Suicide truck bombs were first used by the Iranian-backed Hezbollah guerrillas in South Lebanon in 1982.

Washington will need little convincing that Iran's fingerprints are all over the UN bombing. More suicide truck bombs are bound to come. And so will the calls in Washington for the next conquest, the march on the Iranian capital Teheran.

Bush's war in Iraq has not ended. It has barely begun.
