It was even worse, Jerry, I went to college with a lot of GI's. After Germany
surrendered, the guys that were still in one piece were loaded onto troop
ships and were being taken to the South Pacific. They weren't even being
given a respite in the States to see their families. I don't know if the war
lasted long enough in the Pacific for them to have made it to the fighting on
the other side. I just can't remember. For some of the guys, it was like it
was for James Clavell. I remember when he was interviewed by somebody on a
morning TV show (It might have been Walters), and whoever it was asked him to
what he attributed his survival (he was a prisoner in Singapore 'the King Rat
thing'). His answer was, "The war ended." The interviewer was really
confused for a moment. She was expecting the "faith in God" thing or
"thinking of my family." But the reason a lot of guys survived the war
whereever they were was just that. The war ended.
